Art Syllabus Instructor: Terrie Tata, ttata@houstonisd.org ,T. H. Rogers Middle School, Conference Fourth Period Philosophy: Visual Art is an important part of a student’s education. Students are challenged to find creative and unique solutions to problems. It is this use of creative problem solving skills that fosters higher level thinking skills. Art also offers students the opportunity to work cooperatively, to be responsible, and to appreciate other cultures and the world around them. Course Overview: Art meets the Texas Assessment of Skills requirement. Art is formulated around the Texas State Standards for Visual Arts. In art students explore fundamentals of drawing, painting, lettering, and composition. Students will be given technical instruction in the use of various media and explore creative approaches in artistic expression. Students will study art history in relation to the art projects they are creating in class. Students will also complete reading, writing and sketchbook assignments for class. Students will complete artwork which will be critiqued. Grading: Art projects will be graded on specific predefined criteria, which include: following directions, neatness and craftsmanship, composition and design, originality and creativity, class participation, work habits and growth. The main focus of art class is on creating artwork, so art projects are worth the most points in class. Student’s grades will be based on the following: Art Projects 50% Daily Warm-ups: 25% Written work and tests: 25% Late Policy: It is important that students are present for every class period, however, we don’t live in a perfect world and students will be absent due to appointments, etc. If a student misses class it will be the responsibility of the student to check what assignment he or she has missed. Classroom Behavior Expectations: The art room is an environment where students should feel free to explore and experiment. This can only happen when there is an atmosphere of trust between all students and faculty. Students are expected to: 1. Be a Responsible Student. (Bring your materials to school, get your work done, clean up your mess, etc.) 2. Be a Respectful Student. (Respect the teachers, administrators, and other students. When the teacher or another student is talking watch and listen out of respect. Respect other student’s property, the classroom materials, and the school. Be respectful when talking. No vulgarity. Speak in a positive manner. The words “shut up, sucks and stupid” are not allowed in my classroom.) 3. Be a Good Citizen of the School. (Obey all school rules.) 4. Be a Trustworthy Student. (I can trust you to take care of the classroom, to clean up your mess, to complete your work, and to speak appropriately.) 5. Always do Your Personal Best. Consequences 1. Signal (look or gesture) 2.
