Art I Syllabus Instructor: Terrie Tata, T. H. Rogers Middle School Philosophy: Visual Art is an important part of a student’s education. Students are challenged to find creative and unique solutions to problems. It is this use of creative problem solving skills that fosters higher level thinking skills. Art also offers students the opportunity to work cooperatively, to be responsible, and to appreciate other cultures and the world around them. Course Overview: Art 1 meets the Texas Assessment of Skills requirement. Art 1 is formulated around the Texas State Standards for Visual Arts. In Art 1 students explore fundamentals of drawing, painting, lettering, and composition. Students will be given technical instruction in the use of various media and explore creative approaches in artistic expression. Students will study art history in relation to the art projects they are creating in class. Students will also complete reading, writing and sketchbook assignments for class. Students will complete a test or artwork critique at the end of each quarter/semester based on what they have learned in class. At the end of the year, the student is to complete a portfolio which facilitates the breadth section of AP Portfolio for college credit. Supplies: Students will be expected to bring the following supplies to class: • Sketchbook - Students will be required to keep a sketchbook. • Small Binder or Folder-Students will be expected to keep a small binder or folder in class to keep any class notes and handouts in. • Pencils and Eraser – Students must have a pencil and eraser with them every day in art class. Please make sure that they have more than one pencil. No mechanical pencils. Grading: Art projects will be graded on specific predefined criteria, which include: following directions, neatness and craftsmanship, composition and design, originality and creativity, class participation, work habits and growth. The main focus of art class is on creating artwork, so art projects are worth the most points in class. Student’s grades will be based on the following: Art Projects 50% Daily Warm-ups: 25% Written work and tests: 25% Late Policy: It is important that students are present for every class period, however, we don’t live in a perfect world and students will be absent due to appointments, etc. If a student misses class it will be the responsibility of the student to check what assignment he or she has missed. Class Work & Homework Expectations: Students will be expected to finish their art projects in class. Art projects are created best at school where students have access to all materials. However, if a student is falling behind on assignments they always have the option of coming into work on their projects at lunchtime or before or after school in my classroom. If a student can’t complete a project at school then they need to come see me to make arrangements to take their projects home. Students will also be expected to complete occasional reading, writing and sketch book assignments for homework. Classroom Behavior Expectations: The art room is an environment where students should feel free to explore and experiment. This can only happen when there is an atmosphere of trust between all students and faculty. Students are expected to: 1. Be a Responsible Student. (Bring your materials to school, get your work done, clean up your mess, etc.) 2. Be a Respectful Student. (Respect the teachers, administrators, and other students. When the teacher or another student is talking watch and listen out of respect. Respect other student’s property, the classroom materials, and the school. Be respectful when talking. No vulgarity. Speak in a positive manner. The words “shut up, sucks and stupid” are not allowed in my classroom.) 3. Be a Good Citizen of the School. (Obey all school rules.) 4. Be a Trustworthy Student. (I can trust you to take care of the classroom, to clean up your mess, to complete your work, and to speak appropriately.) 5. Always do Your Personal Best. Consequences 1. Signal (look or gesture) 2. Verbal Reminder of Correct Behavior 3. Student-Teacher Conference (behavior contract, detention, meeting after class) 4. Parent Contact 5. Referral Teacher/Parent Communication: It has been my experience that effective communication between parent and teacher is the key to great year. Students need to know that we care, and we are on the same page. That is extremely important! After all, we all have the same goal; which is your child’s success, happiness and achievement. I encourage any parent who has a question or concern to send me a note, call me at school at (713) 917-3570. I look forward to a year of growth and learning. Ms Terrie Tata Art Teacher T.
