How is ESOL taught in Elementary School? Who is an ESOL student? Potential ESOL students are students who communicate in a language other than English whose families use a primary language other than English in the home who use a language other than English outside of school Students’ eligibility for ESOL services is determined by the results on a state-mandated English language proficiency test. Home Language Surveys All families are asked to tell the school what languages are spoken at home. If any other languages are reported as spoken, the student is tested for ESOL program eligibility. Pre-K: Comments 2x a year Kindergarten: Report card grades (1-5) 2x a year GR 1-5: Report card grades (1-5) 4x a year What is the ACCESS? State-mandated test for all ESOL students (including Parent Refusals). January 2016 Measures ESOL students’ performance level in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing Results sent home and used for next year’s ESOL placement. Here’s what we do in ESOL: We build Knowledge + Teach new words first before the class does it. + Act out the words + Read a variety of books and use pictures of the words + Show us by speaking the words and drawing pictures. We apply what we’ve learned: *Write lists of words *Sort words and pictures into categories *Show us in writing and with pictures What is PARCC? *Tells us if our students are learning all we want them to learn so they can be successful when they graduate. * The skills are hard like critical thinking and problem solving. *These are new skills never tested before. *There is a Parent Guide to PARCC that you are welcome to take for more information and description of the test and its scores.
