whose families use a primary language
other than English in the home

outside of school
Students’ eligibility for ESOL services is determined by
the results on a state-mandated English language

Home Language Surveys

the school what languages
are spoken at home.
If any other languages are
reported as spoken, the

Here’s what we do in ESOL:
We build Knowledge
+ Teach new words first before the class does it.
+ Act out the words
+ Read a variety of books and use pictures of the
words
+ Show us by speaking the words and drawing
pictures.
We apply what we’ve learned:
*Write lists of words
*Sort words and pictures into categories
*Show us in writing and with pictures
What is PARCC?
*Tells us if our students are learning all we want them
to learn so they can be successful when they
graduate.
* The skills are hard like critical thinking and problem
solving.
*These are new skills never tested before.
*There is a Parent Guide to PARCC that you are
welcome to take for more information and
description of the test and its scores.
