Course Description: Smog Check Inspector Training Level II:
This course provides students with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform Smog Check inspections. Students
who successfully complete this course will have met step two of the Bureau of Automotive Repair's training requirements to
qualify to take the Smog Check Inspector state licensing examination.
Students need to satisfy the recommended course preparations which include Level 1 Inspector training or the alternate
experience criteria listed below in order to qualify for the State License Examination. *
Advisory: This class is the second requirement for those submitting an application to take the California Bureau of Automotive Repair State
Inspector License Examination. Recommend students take Smog Level I first or have their ASE or BAR A6, A8, and L1 certifications.
* Experienced candidates may skip Level 1 training if they: Possess ASE A6, A8 and L1 certification; or possess an
AA/AS degree or Certificate in automotive technology and have 1 year experience; or have 2 years experience and
have completed BAR specified diagnostic and repair training.
Applicants with both Level 1 and Level 2 certificates or experienced candidates as listed above* with a level 2
certificate, (certificates received within the last 2 years,) may apply for the state smog inspector license exam.
Licensed Smog Check Inspectors are required to complete update training for license renewal.

Smog Check Inspector License Update Training - up to 4 hours BAR training every two years.
Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this training, students shall be able to:
1. Describe and demonstrate personal, shop, equipment, and vehicle safety practices.
2. Describe the laws, regulations, and procedures associated with consumer authorization of inspections and the
overall administration of the Smog Check Program.
3. Describe the standards of practice expected of Smog Check Inspectors.
4. Demonstrate ability to calibrate an emission inspection system.
5. Demonstrate their knowledge, skills and abilities in performing Smog Check emission tests on various
vehicle designs.
6. Demonstrate their knowledge, skills and abilities in performing Smog Check visual inspections on various
vehicle designs.
7. Describe and demonstrate they have the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform smog check functional
tests on various vehicle designs.

Intended Student Learning Outcomes:
The student will be able to:
1. Describe and demonstrate personal, shop, equipment, and vehicle safety practices.
2. Understand and abide by Smog check laws, regulations, and procedures for administration of program and
consumer authorization. Standards of practice expected of inspectors.
3. Perform Smog check visual, functional, and operational testing of vehicles on BAR approved testing
equipment.
To pass Level 2 training, a student must successfully complete a series of hands-on assessments and pass a
written examination.
Pre/Co-requisite(s): AUSER 101 Recommended, Minimal or no experience required
Method of Instruction: Lectures, Class discussions, Demonstrations, Hands on training, and BAR modules and videos.
Requirements:
1. Safety glasses (meeting ANSI Z87standards)
2. Shop appropriate attire and shoes, no loose clothing, sandals, or tennis shoes

Safety & Pollution Prevention Tests:
SP2 Mechanical Safety and Mechanical Pollution Prevention final tests must be taken and passed before
student can use lifts, tools, and equipment and participate with hands on activities within the shop. ( If you don’t
have the mechanical version or your tests have expired, you must take the mechanical versions.) Everyone
must turn in a printed copy of their certificates. I will return them to you.

Grading Policy:
Letter Grade
90% - 100% = A
80% - 89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
Below 60% = F
A passing score for the final exam for this course is required in order to receive a Level II certificate from
the Bureau of Auto Repair. A second attempt of the final exam to attain a 70 % score is permissible within 60
days but has no reflection on your grade for the course.

Homework:
Homework will be assigned each week. It will be due at the beginning of class the following week.
Homework received after class commences and the homework turn-in folder is closed will be marked as late
and points will be deducted for being received late. The beginning of class is not the time to do your
homework. It is your responsibility to get your homework assignment from someone else in your class if you
miss the assignment and are unaware of what is due the following week. You are responsible for both
assignments when you return from an absence.
Quizzes:
It is your responsibility to find out what you missed in class, as well as your homework assignments. You have
one week to make up missed quizzes or tests. You should arrange with the instructor, a mutually agreed upon
time, for you to take make up quizzes or tests by the following class date (or sooner if schedules permit.)
Mid-term Exam:
The Mid-term exam will be comprehensive and will be given at the half-way point of the semester.
Final Exam:
The final exam will be comprehensive for the entire course.

Attendance:
You are expected to be present for the entire class period. Roll will be taken at the beginning and at the end
of class. CCC’s student attendance policy is stated in the college catalog. Students may be dropped by the
instructor for failure to attend class in the following circumstances: Absence from the first meeting of class or
after absence from six hours of class (this is 2 of our class sessions)
Reasons for dismissal from class:
You must be told more than once to put on your safety glasses. You use your cell phone in class. Your
electronic media devices, (tablets, I-pads, notebooks, laptops, school PCs) are being used via content unrelated
to the class topic or deemed unacceptable or not in context by the instructor. You do not clean up the
classroom. You do not follow instructions and rules. You disrespect any vehicles, property, classmates or
instructor or you refuse to foster teamwork within the class. This will count as an absence for that portion of the
class.
