CIC Bylaws - Curriculum review process - DRAFT
Department chair review – “I have reviewed this proposal and found it consistent with the mission of the department and the
needs of our students. The department plans to offer the course in the near future.”
Comments:
Dean’s signature – “I have reviewed the proposal for compliance with Title 5 provisions and for consistency with the needs of
students.”
Comments:
DCR/DIC Review: Division Curriculum representative meets with faculty originator to talk about the course, ask
questions, and give suggestions. When faculty originator is also a Division reviewer, the DIR/DIC review must be done
by another reviewer
Template/checklist for DIR/DIC review:
Course justification is detailed enough (“to satisfy student needs” does not suffice) and reasonable
Hours-to-units ratio
Pre-requisites/co-requisites provide a matrix or narrative validation
Hours by arrangement, if any, include an explicit list of activities students will complete to satisfy the requirement.
CB Coding makes sense?
Examples of assignments that demonstrate college-level reading, writing, and critical thinking
Technical review team: CIC Chair. Who else? Articulation Officer? VP of Instruction? A member of the Counseling
Department? If it’s only the CIC chair, problems related to articulation, fit of the proposed course/changes to students’ needs,
and impact on other departments will not be detected until they come to CIC, so they may need to be redone and set back two
weeks.
Subcommittee review: at the CIC meetings? Before meetings?
Template for subcommittee review (in particular what needs to be reported to whole committee)
?????
Minor technical correction – will be fast tracked to CIC’s consent agenda (what are some examples?)
Deactivation form should ask the question of whether course is part of a major or certificate and needs to be deleted (and what
the effects are). But we don’t have a deactivation form!!
Discuss Division Curriculum reviews at Division meetings.
