COURSE/CATALOG DESCRIPTION
This course is for students who know basic ceramics forming and decorating techniques and who want to
improve on surface decorating. Students will learn how to mix materials that can be used to enhance the
surface of a ceramic object. They will critically assess their own work and that of their classmates.
COURSE OBJECTIVE
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
Demonstrate a working knowledge of decorative techniques, including some executed on the potter's wheel.
Demonstrate knowledge of basic formulation and mixing of colored clay, slips, stains and oxides, and glazes.
Demonstrate a broader ability to critically analyze and assess his/her own and peers' work.
Demonstrate safe use of materials, studio and tools.
COURSE CONTENT:
Introducing texturing methods on the potter's wheel; formulation and mixing of colored clays, slips, underglazes, stains,
oxides and glazes; new uses of same materials; design considerations.
Critiquing of artwork.
Contemporary and historical pieces pertaining to techniques covered.
