School of Law, Politics and Sociology School Health, Safety and Environment Committee The 6th meeting of the School of Law, Politics and Sociology Health, Safety and Environment Committee was held during the School Executive Board meeting 24 June 2015 at 2pm in Freeman F41 Present: Aleks Szczerbiak (Director of Doctoral Studies); Claire Annesley (Head of Politics); Donald McGillivray (Director of Student Experience); Erika Szyszczak (Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange); Gerard Delanty (Director of Internationalisation); Heather Keating (Chair/Acting Head of School); Jo Moran-Ellis (Head of Sociology); Kate Hamilton-Border (Schools Project Officer); Richard Vogler (Acting Head of Law) and Susan Millns (Director of Teaching and Learning) Apologies for Absence: John Child (Lecturer in Law); Lynn Gibbs (School Administrator) and Mark Raven (Finance Manager) 1. LPS Health & Safety Management Policy and Safety Policy 2014-2015 - paper SHSEC/LPS/6/1 The Committee noted the policy. 2. Health & Safety Risk Assessment Records - updated 1 October 2014 (available to view in Freeman G41) were noted by the Committee: (i) Use of photocopiers (ii) Use of display screen equipment (iii) Use of office equipment (iv) Working in School Office open to the public (v) Manual handling of stationery, furniture and equipment (vi) Field trips (risk assessment held on file by School Administrator) 3. School Safety Inspection The Committee noted that the Freeman Building School Safety Inspection would be carried out on 14 July 2015 by Lynn Gibbs (School Administrator) and Martin Combs (QSHE Advisor). [please note: this inspection date was subsequently changed to 16 July 2015 and will be conducted by Lynn Gibbs (School Administrator) and Nic Carstens (QSHE Advisor).] 4. Accidents and Incidents Reported The Committee noted the following accident for 2014/2015: (i) 18 August 2014 Professional Service staff member received an electric shock from a frayed lamp cable in the Freeman School Office. The emergency response team were called to check staff member (placed in the recovery position by School first aiders). Staff member fine after resting. Electrician attended, removed lamp and checked electrical circuits around desk. 5. Driving at Work The Committee noted that all LPS staff were sent an email (12 May 2015) explaining the ‘Driving at Work Policy’. Please note that if you drive for work purposes (this includes driving to conferences, meetings, away days, training courses, visiting students on placements etc.) but not normal home to work commuting you will need to have your driving licence/counterpart, car insurance (business travel cover) and MOT certificate checked in advance. Without these checks, which won’t take long, you are not approved to drive for work purposes and cannot claim a mileage allowance. [please note: The School Administrator discussed the Driving at Work Policy with Martin Combs (QSHE Advisor) 13 May 2015 during the LPS Health & Safety Audit meeting. He advised that this policy did not apply to staff despite the School being repeatedly told it did by Sue Carter (Director of Health & Safety and Compliance). Further clarification to be sought.] 6. DSE (Display Screen Equipment) Assessments The Committee noted the following table showing DSE assessments for LPS as of 6 June 2014: Number Completed Outstanding Faculty 72 63 9 88% Professional Service Staff 15 15 0 100% Total Staff LPS 87 78 9 90% A new round of assessments has been started due to the move in August 2014 to the Freeman Building. 7. PEEPS (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans) The Committee noted that the completion of PEEP forms is still under discussion with the University. 8. SEF Audit - paper SHSEC/LPS/6/2 To Committee noted the SEF Audit held on 13 May 2015 by Martin Combs (QSHE Advisor) and Lynn Gibbs (LPS School Administrator). 6/7/15
