Temperature Scales
Question: How is temperature measured?
Purpose: To determine the formula for converting oC to oF
Procedure:
1.
You will have 4 containers of water labeled #1, #2, #3, #4.
2. Using the thermometer, find the temperature in each of the beakers.
3. You will measure the oC and create a data chart on the back of this paper to
record the temperature.
4. Using the thermometer scale on the back, find the corresponsing oF and record
on the data chart.
Materials:
Celsius thermometer
Goggles
4 containers of water, of different temperatures
Variables:
Independent variable –
Dependent variable –
Analyzing Data:
1.
On a sheet of graph paper, graph the Fahrenheit vs. Celsius data. The oF data
goes on the y axis and theoC data goes on the x axis.
DO NOT MAKE A BREAK IN THE LINE.
2. Draw a trend line.
3. Find the rate of change (slope) for the line. Show your process for finding the
rate of change on the graph paper.
4. Find the value of y where the line crosses the y axis.
5. The information on the line will tell you the formula for converting oC to oF.
6. The model for the formula will be in the form:
y = mx + b
m = rate of change
y = y axis value
x = x axis value
b = value of y where the line crosses the y axis
1.
2.
What is the formula for converting oC to oF?
