Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Technical Director, UNR Theatre Department, manages the theatre facilities and supervises students in set construction for all Nevada Repertory Company productions and summer theatre. The individual collaborates with Theatre faculty in developing productions and managing academic curriculum, especially in technical theatre and scenic design. The Technical Director has an active role in individual instruction and provides professional management of equipment, materials, maintenance and safety needs. This person serves the department’s mission to upgrade the professional management of our facility and increase the departmental expertise in an essential part of theatre studies. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 50% - Scene Shop Operations and Laboratory Instruction Oversee operations and maintenance of scene shop, theatre facilities and storage areas Hire, train and supervise paid student shop assistants Instruct, train and supervise students working in scene shop for credit Maintain standards for safe working environment Purchase equipment, materials and supplies Teach technical theatre and scenic design competencies 30% - Technical Direction for Nevada Repertory Productions Collaborate with directors and designers to develop a production plan and calendar Supervise construction for each NRC production Collaborate in developing production budgets Attend all production meetings Supervise all technical rehearsals and performances of NRC productions Coordinate and oversee strikes (dismantling sets) Assist in developing work assignments for student production crews Assist director in training stage managers for each production 20% - Theatre Facilities Management Ensure safety and cleanliness standards for scene shop and storage areas Inspect and maintain equipment Maintain first aid supplies and safety equipment Report building repair and maintenance needs 3. Level of Freedom: The Technical Director has managerial control of a major area of theatre productions—the scene shop, equipment, materials and storage facilities. This position helps to create high quality theatrical sets that are the standard for theatre in northern Nevada. Position Description – Technical Director, UNR Theatre Department Page 3 The technical director is responsible for executing the work of a scenic designer within budgets established by the department chair. The technical director will possess great freedom until irresolvable conflict arises in the collaborative process. If a director or scenic designer’s vision for scenic elements cannot be facilitated within the provided budget or if the collaborative process becomes contentious, the chair will mediate decisions that balance artistic need with fiduciary responsibility. The technical director has the same level of freedom that other Theatre faculty enjoy to affect the educational experience of our students and the creative activities of Nevada Repertory Company productions. Impact: The contributions of the Technical director support the teaching, service, and outreach goals of the university. The technical director offers a class each semester and provides hands-on experiences for students learning theatre arts preparing them for careers in theatre. Nevada Repertory Company productions are attended by university students and community members for the greater Truckee Meadows community. 4.
