1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Specialist, Desktop Application is responsible for application support and web site maintenance
for the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) Division. This
individual acts as a liaison between DAR and Desktop Services support in Information Technology
(IT) to facilitate computer software/hardware troubleshooting, network connectivity issues, and
peripheral configuration and connectivity issues.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage
first with heading and then bulleted information).
60% - Application Support
 Provide application support for the personal computers and peripheral equipment
 Support software applications on a daily basis including answering questions and
troubleshooting problems
 Provide technical assistance to staff with application software
 Act as a liaison between DAR and Desktop Services to resolve PC hardware, software
install/upgrade issues, network connectivity, and peripheral configuration issues
 Perform and maintain yearly hardware (computers, peripherals, etc) & departmental software
inventory
30%- Website Maintenance
 Maintain departmental websites using web development tools including update content,
update navigation structure, test and troubleshoot problems
10% - Training
 Train Development & Alumni Relations employees in the use of fundraising software (Raiser’s
Edge), general ledger (Financial Edge), MS Office Suite, Crystal Reports, and Adobe Acrobat
and Contribute in both group and one on one training environments

the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom
Independent judgment is used to troubleshoot and pursue the resolution of issues. The incumbent is
provided direction on goals and may make recommendations on hardware and software purchases.
Impact
Decisions and judgments made by this position impact the ability of DAR staff to effectively perform
their job duties by providing a high level of application and computer support. Professional demeanor
in interactions with various departments on campus and University Foundation Trustees impacts the
division’s fund raising and public relations success.

4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written
communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
Knowledge of:
 Report writing software (Crystal Reports or other)
 Web design and maintenance tools and software
 Computer systems, networking systems and related software and equipment
Skills:
 Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Windows OS
 Familiarity with VBA used in conjunction with Microsoft Office Suite
 Organizational skills, including the ability to set priorities and manage a variety of projects
simultaneously
 Software packages including but not limited to fundraising (Raiser’s Edge), accounting
(Financial Edge), document imaging (Nolij)
 Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not
limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email)
Ability to:
 Communicate verbally and in writing in clear and concise language with individuals at all levels
 Assess users needs and develop and implement solutions
