1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Senior Administrator, Network Operations, provides technical management, oversight, and needs
analysis for network cabling, fiber optic and equipment installations. This position is also responsible
for resolving network issues, equipment installations, equipment repairs, monitoring and management
of network management stations, and the development of operational procedures. A reliable network
is critical to all area of the university.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage
first with heading and then bulleted information).
30% - Cable Infrastructure Planning and Coordination
 Evaluate and make recommendation for changes to the cabling infrastructure
 Work with and direct cable technicians to install new fiber/copper cabling and to repair existing
cable plant as needed to support communication needs
 Keep documentation updated
 Support the location of underground fiber/copper cable as requested
 Coordinate the process of assigning and connecting fibers in backbone for use around
campus
 Work with outside vendors on cabling request, equipment installs
30% - Network Maintenance/Troubleshooting
 Work with the Help Desk to resolve network related trouble calls that could not be resolved by
the Help Desk, computer system administrators or network wiring technicians
 Replace or repair defect network equipment
 Use network protocol analyzer software to evaluate network packets
 Monitor network management consoles to quickly find and resolve network issues
 Work with others in department to develop operational procedure
20% - Network Management
 Install/maintain network monitoring servers, workstations and systems
 Evaluate new management packages for usefulness on campus
 Keep management informed on network issues and problems
 Work with and/or direct network technicians in locating and solving problems with the network
 Review network logs to find and quickly resolve network issue
10% - Network Installations/Operations
 Configure and install, as needed, network equipment
 Keep network documentation updated
 Evaluate existing network needs, make recommendation to management
10% - Project Management
 Provide oversight to determine costs, schedules and list of materials needed for cabling
projects

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without

the university as a whole.
A stable communications infrastructure is critical to the daily operation of campus computing in all
areas of the university. Failure to perform satisfactorily results in network slowdowns and outages,
impacting overall productivity of faculty, staff and students. Students, researchers, classrooms, and
administrative areas would not have access to the resources needed.

Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution
b.
Minimum type and amount of work experience, in addition to the above required
education necessary for a person entering this position.
Bachelor’s Degree and four years of experience in a large network operations
environment, including TCP/IP, equipment configuration and Unix administration.
Experience working with network cabling including fiber optics
