1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
In collaboration with the Director of the Technology Transfer Office (TTO), the Manager for
Technology Commercialization and Industry Partnerships (Manager) is responsible for
commercializing technologies developed at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), and the Desert
Research Institute (DRI), and for fostering and supporting collaborations between the institutions,
industry, and the economic development, business, and entrepreneurial communities.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide
enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage
first with heading and then bulleted information).
50% - Technology Marketing
 Ensure that, in consultation with the inventors, a summary is prepared of the advantages of
each technology in the UNR/DRI TTO portfolio (“portfolio technologies”) compared to prior art
and competing solutions to the same problem that is addressed by the technology being
evaluated
 Ensure the production of market analysis for portfolio technologies, including that potential
customers and licensees are contacted to discuss the potential advantages of the technology;
based on these contacts, ensure that specific technical milestones and data that would be
meaningful to potential customers and licensees are identified
 Ensure that value propositions are developed for portfolio technologies based upon the
technical analysis, market analyses, and customer contacts
 See that approved technology value propositions are posted on the TTO website and sent to
potential licensees
 Ensure the production of short reports outlining the potential markets for selected portfolio
technologies
 Ensure the development and execution of marketing plans for portfolio technologies, including
the identification of potential license terms and potential licensees, and that potential licensees
are contacted
 Ensure that the best licensees for portfolio technologies are identified, including obtaining input
from the Director and the inventors of the respective technologies
 Work collaboratively with the Director to license portfolio technologies
 In collaboration with the Director, initiate, coordinate, and direct marketing support efforts,
such as student workers and entrepreneurs in residence, in order to carry out the above
functions
25% - Outreach
 Assist with media and public relations efforts, including working with institutional and other
resources to maintain and enhance the TTO website and email newsletter
 Assist the Director in engaging the local industrial, business, entrepreneurial, and investment
communities to enhance collaborative efforts with the institutions and identify new
opportunities for the communities to collaborate with the institutions
 In collaboration with the Director, assist faculty in identifying potential corporate partners for
sponsored projects and for student internship opportunities, including engaging student
workers and community resources in such efforts
 Assist the Director in responding to industry requests for collaborations with the institutions,
including identifying appropriate contacts within UNR/DRI and monitoring progress to ensure
the inquiry is seen to completion

Assist the Director in carrying out internal in-reach efforts to identify institutional technologies
with potential commercial value, educate faculty and staff regarding technology transfer,
enhancing the commercial potential of their research efforts, fostering industry collaborations,
and related issues
15% - Technology Analysis
 Ensure that new invention disclosures submitted by institutional inventors are reviewed and
inventors consulted in order to determine the market potential of disclosed technologies
 In collaboration with the Director, determine whether to file new patent applications or continue
pursuit or maintenance of existing patent applications and patents in view of the technology’s
market potential, state of development, and likelihood of obtaining commercially viable patent
protection
 Assist the Director in establishing and maintaining programs for assisting with technology
analysis, such as involving students from science, engineering, and business, and community
members
5% - Program Review and Strategic Analysis
 In collaboration with the Director, critically evaluate TTO operations, including identifying
opportunities to improve processes and leverage resources to expand and improve TTO
services
 In collaboration with the Director, critically evaluate TTO performance, including identifying
dysfunctional processes and conceiving new processes for achieving TTO goals
5% Management Responsibilities
 Supervise student workers
 Recruit, manage and coordinate community members’ participation
 Handle other duties/projects as assigned by the TTO Director, VPR, Provost, or President

Level of Freedom:
The Manager is responsible for carrying out the responsibilities of the position in consultation with the
Director. In particular, the Manager assists the Director in developing action plans, programs, and
strategies. The Manager is then responsible for implementing the plans, programs, and strategies,
consulting the Director as needed and appropriate. The Director assists the Manager in prioritizing
activities.
Impact:
When performed appropriately, the Manager’s actions will enhance the standing and visibility of the
TTO, UNR, and DRI, and lead to increased collaboration with industry, faculty satisfaction with TTO
operations, commercialization success, and license revenue.
