1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Director, Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT), provides vision, leadership, and advocacy
for the effective use of technology in teaching and learning. In collaboration with university faculty and
administrators, the Director develops and implements strategies and initiatives that facilitate
pedagogical innovation and support excellence in teaching and learning. Reporting to the Dean of
Libraries, the position directs the efforts of staff in Classroom Design and Support and Instructional
Design.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

50% - Management and Supervision
 Provides leadership and management for staff and services in Classroom Design and Support
and Instructional Design units and ensures alignment with university mission and goals
 Hires, supervises, and evaluates performance of unit managers
 Assists unit managers to develop strategies, programs, and implementation plans to improve
online and hybrid instruction and classroom technology support services to University
students, faculty, staff and administration
 Facilitates collaboration between with TLT and library managers to develop and implement
projects that build on and integrate strengths across the library/TLT organization
 Develops departmental policies and procedures
 Oversees systems to maintain accurate inventory of all TLT equipment; provides direction and
follow-up to assure compliance with university and state inventory control regulations
 As a member of the Dean’s management team, participates in decision making, policy
development, and planning for Library and TLT units
 Collects and compiles program data and prepares budget requests and other reports as
requested
 Coordinates and prioritizes TLT purchase requests and budget items
30% - Project Planning and Development
 Determines methodologies and strategies for effective educational technology integration
 Collaborates with university departments and administration and Information Technology (IT)
to plan, coordinate, and implement campus plans for instructional technologies
 Oversees strategic integration and adoption of the course management system across
campus departments
 Oversees projects, establishes goals and parameters, prioritizes projects and manages
timelines for instructional technology implementations
 Works with Facilities, architects, and campus contractors on the design, planning, and
installation of technology in classrooms, auditoriums, and other learning environments
 Advises campus and department administrators on the selection of educational technology
systems, equipment, software, and related materials
 Explores emerging technologies and assesses their potential and cost-effectiveness
 Maintains planning documents for the maintenance, replacement, and upgrades of
instructional software, equipment, and network needs

 Develops assessment strategies
 Monitors and assesses quality of service for continuous improvement

 Serves on university committees and ad-hoc groups, as necessary, in support of advancing
the TLT mission to campus
 Consults and communicates with university departments to determine needs and share
information about software, equipment or policy changes or status of projects
 Develops relationships with faculty and campus offices to foster the utilization educational
technologies
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Director, Teaching and Learning Technologies makes recommendations about and oversees the
implementation of campus-wide teaching and learning technologies – in classrooms, presentation and
performance spaces, and online/remote systems. The position requires independence and autonomy
in decision making within a framework of broadly stated guidelines, objectives, specialized knowledge,
and research. Situations are varied and frequently highly complex. The Director has the ability to
influence and make key strategic-level decisions. Additionally, the Director is expected to initiate and
lead the institution’s preparation for future teaching and learning technologies needs. However, final
decisions about major campus initiatives are made in consultation with the Dean of Libraries,
university administration, and other campus leaders.
Impact:
Decisions and performance of the Director have a campus-wide impact. The incumbent makes
decisions regarding classroom technologies and the course management system that directly impact
the success of teaching and learning activities, and may either facilitate or impede faculty and student
access to technology. They also represent large economic investments with significant economic
consequences for the institution.
