Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Director, Laboratory Animal Medicine and Attending Veterinarian, is responsible for providing animal welfare oversight regarding all vertebrate animals used at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR); providing veterinary care for UNR animals; ensuring compliance with Federal and state laws, regulations and guidelines governing the use of animals in UNR research, education, and testing programs; acting as the primary public spokesperson for UNR components regarding animal care and use issues; providing direct supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Animal Veterinarian (CLAV), Laboratory Technicians and Program Officer at UNR, and laboratory animal care at UNR. The Director serves as a voting member on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) at UNR. The position reports to the Assistant Vice President, Research Administration. 2. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 45% - Federal and State Laws, Regulations, and Guidelines Compliance Maintain in-depth familiarity with all applicable statutes to ensure that animal care and use programs at UNR are compliant with regulations; maintain strong working relationships with regulatory agencies; facilitate regulatory inspections, communicate findings, and oversee resolution of findings and any deficiencies Ensure that all applications and reports required by regulatory agencies are prepared and submitted in a timely manner Actively participate in the IACUC as the Attending Veterinarian by reviewing all protocols to ensure appropriate use of animals in research and training As directly responsible for laboratory animal care at UNR, supervise the laboratory technicians, Classified staff, and the Clinical Laboratory Animal Veterinarian Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for care of animals, maintenance and sanitation of animal facilities, maintenance and operation of cage washing and sanitation equipment, and managing the animal care program are developed and implemented; assist faculty in developing project specific SOPs to ensure humane and legally compliant animal care and use during research and teaching activities Conduct periodic, unannounced and announced, reviews of animal care and use activities to ensure that appropriate and regulatory compliant standards of animal care and use are being maintained 50% - Animal Care and Use Program Development and Implementation Provide veterinary care, including after hour care, for UNR research, teaching and production animals Develop and implement animal care and use programs throughout UNR to promote animal welfare, quality animal maintenance, and quality science Work closely with the CLAV at UNR; faculty, and animal care staff; and the UNR IACUC to ensure that UNR variables (e.g., research and teaching programs/goals, facilities, and personnel resources) are evaluated on a regular basis and that practical and effective animal care and use procedures and maintenance systems are implemented; assist in identifying resources required to implement any recommended procedures/policies To provide an independent measure of the quality of UNR animal care and use programs, maintain accreditation by the American Association for the Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC). Level of Freedom: The incumbent is required to assure high quality and humane animal care and use programs. This requires appropriate administrative, managerial, and clinical veterinary medical decisions and judgments related to all animal care associated with research and teaching on the UNR campus and its affiliated properties. Impact: Errors in decisions and judgments regarding animal care and use programs may result in serious harm to animals, the potential loss of research data and federal funding that could have an adverse impact on faculty and student research activities. Errors in decision and judgments regarding regulatory issues and compliance may lead to violations of Federal, state, or local laws and regulations resulting in significant fines. Also, in regards to the regulatory issues, errors in decision and judgment may, in the extreme, lead to serious safety, health, or environmental hazard exposure for UNR personnel and/or related communities. 4.
