1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Clinical Laboratory Animal Veterinarian reports to the Director of Laboratory Animal Medicine
under the Vice President for Research at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). In conjunction with
the Director, the incumbent is responsible for overseeing and maintaining daily veterinary medical
programs to include health monitoring/surveillance veterinary care; preventive medicine and
emergency care for a diverse population of species, ranging from traditional laboratory animal species
(transgenic rodents, rabbits, amphibians, etc.) to farm animals in an agricultural setting; veterinary
support for research protocols at both the UNR and University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV)
campuses; research protocol review to ensure compliance with applicable federal regulations and
policies; training for animal care and research staff regarding care and use of research animals and
protocol compliance; monitoring compliance with approved protocols; colony health monitoring;
assisting units in maintaining Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal
Care (AAALAC) accreditation; and reviewing and updating laboratory animal and veterinary care
standard operating procedures as required.

30% - Program Compliance and Oversight
 Assists in the oversight of the animal care and use program to ensure that it meets the
regulatory and accreditation requirements
 Maintains in-depth familiarity with all applicable statutes and research protocols identifying any
non-compliant animal care and use elements or procedures at the university
 In conjunction with or in the absence of the Director of Laboratory Animal Medicine, hosts
inspectors or site visitors when they visit university facilities and may prepare drafts of
responses to findings by inspectors or site visitors
 Conducts periodic, unannounced or announced, reviews of animal care and use activities to
ensure that appropriate and regulatory compliance standards of animal care and use are being
maintained
 Assists with IACUC functions and serve as the veterinarian alternate and sometimes as the
primary IACUC veterinarian.
25% - Animal Care Program Development and Implementation Assistance
 Works closely with administrators, faculty, animal care staff, and institutional animal care
committees to evaluate institutional variables and recommend practical and effective animal
care and use procedures and maintenance systems
 Provides independent measure of the quality of university animal care and use programs
 Works closely with the Director of Laboratory Animal Medicine at UNR and the Supervisor of
Laboratory Animal Care Services at UNLV to develop, review and implement Emergency
Response plans at both institutions
 Oversees the development and maintenance of an animal care and use Web page, as well as,
publication of periodic critical information animal care and use notices
25% - Direct Veterinary Care
 Provides direct veterinary care or ensures that such care is available
 Develops and implements disease prevention and diagnosis procedures and programs

20% - Program and Procedures Development
 Assists in development of training programs and participates in training of individuals who
work with animals, animal tissues, or related materials to meet regulatory and accreditation
requirements for such training
 Assists in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for care of animals,
maintenance and sanitation of animal facilities, maintenance and operation of cage washing
and sanitation equipment, and managing the animal care program
 Works with faculty to develop project specific SOP to ensure humane and legally compliance
animal care and use during research and teaching activity and in faculty managed facilities
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
The incumbent is required to make high level administrative, managerial, and clinical veterinary
medical decisions and judgments. Errors in decisions and judgments regarding regulatory issues and
compliance may lead to violations of Federal, state, or local laws and regulations resulting in adverse
publicity and fines in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Also, in regards to the regulatory issues,
errors in decisions and judgments may, in the extreme, lead to serious safety, health, or
environmental hazard exposure for the university and community. Errors in decisions and judgments
in regard to personnel and resource management responsibilities may lead to various personnel
complaints and loss of resources. Conversely to the preceding, good decisions and judgments may
lead to high quality and humane animal care and use programs, higher quality research, positive
publicity, compliance with regulatory requirements, and prevention of health, safety and environmental
hazards.

Graduate Veterinarian with a DVM/VMD Degree from an American Veterinary Medical
Association (AVMA) accredited institution
