1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Coordinator of Service Learning is the primary contact person to promote, design, develop,
oversee, and implement an academic service learning (and civic engagement) program at the
University of Nevada, Reno. The Coordinator assists community partners, faculty, and students to
develop service partnerships, collaborates with academic units on campus to integrate servicelearning in the curriculum, promotes service-learning opportunities across campus, maintains files and
tracks student learning participation, and organizes service events on campus. The position reports to
the Director, Service Learning and Civic Engagement.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

50% - Service Learning and Civic Engagement Opportunity Development
 Identify, develop and sustain academic service-learning and civic engagement opportunities
 Identify appropriate community partners for service-learning opportunities for students and
faculty to support course learning
 Facilitate the development of sustainable relationships among community organizations,
faculty, and students
 Serve as liaison between community partners and the University
 Collaborate among service-oriented, volunteer and outreach programs located on campus to
increase academic service-learning opportunities for students
 Develop and implement student learning objectives and assessment for service-learning
activities
 Conduct and verify site visits with community organizations including memoranda of
understanding (MOUs), partner orientations, safety assurances, risk reduction, etc.
 Supervise and Mentor VISTA Volunteers and Student workers in the Office
 Prepare and ensure measures for tracking impact are in place across academic units
implementing service-learning to strengthen service-learning and engagement efforts
institution wide
 Prepare and orient students for academic service-learning experiences
30% - Service Learning Curriculum Integration
 Promote academic service-learning and civic engagement as an important component of
experiential learning and as part of the UNR student experience
 Provide and assist with faculty professional development training opportunities and resources
to develop expertise and proficiency for best practices in service-learning
 Assist faculty with innovative ways in designing and integrating service-learning pedagogies
for teaching and learning into the curriculum
10% - University-wide Service Learning Programming
 Oversee and help develop university events that promote the concepts of community
engagement and service-learning, such as Engagement Showcase, Volunteer Fairs,
University-wide Service Days, and/or Alternative Spring Break

10% - Career Development Office Collaboration
 Collaborate with Career Development Office to coordinate a student’s service learning
activities with career aspirations and work force preparation
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
Under the direction of the Director, Service Learning and Civic Engagement, the position helps to
develop and carry forth the strategic goals of the program. On a day-to-day basis, the Coordinator has
considerable autonomy in decision-making regarding daily operations. The Coordinator is expected to
make recommendations on resource needs, goals and assessment of the program to the Director.
Impact:
If the incumbent performs responsibilities and achieves goals of the program, then students will have
a more enriching educational experience and the University’s reputation will be enhanced in the
community and nation-wide. If the incumbent is unsuccessful in performing the duties of the position,
then students will lose valuable co-learning educational opportunities outside the traditional campus
setting, jeopardizing both the student’s learning potential and the University’s reputation.
