3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Coordinator has considerable freedom to make decisions on the day-to-day functioning of the
recruitment and outreach program. The Coordinator’s responsibilities must be performed without
direct supervision and with a high degree of creativity and initiative. Relaying incorrect information
can delay a student’s progress or result in failure to retain the student. Providing accurate information,
whether advising or recruiting, means good public relations and, in turn, increased recruitment and
retention. The Coordinator establishes short and long term plans for the college’s recruitment and
outreach activities. The Coordinator must be able to deal with diverse audiences (parents,
prospective students, counselors, community leaders, etc.); excellence in this area has the potential
to increase enrollment, open lines of communication, and enhance the college’s image and
effectiveness in the community. The position consults with the Dean and/or Associate Dean on budget
issues and to receive final approval of promotional outreach materials.
Impact:
The recruitment and retention of qualified students from diverse backgrounds is one of the College of
Engineering’s primary goals. The programs the Coordinator oversees will be one of the first contacts
for the College of Engineering, for prospective students. A positive contact will give new students
someone to connect with upon their enrollment at the university and will contribute to the retention of
these students. Contact with the wider community (parents, prospective students, counselors,
community leaders, etc.) will open lines of communication, which will enhance the college’s and
university’s ability to respond positively to the community. These programs are often the first contact
for the College of Engineering, as seen by engineering stakeholders. Within this larger community the
Director must be familiar with research, education, and outreach directions of the college.
4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written
communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and
innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
Knowledge of:
 College of Engineering units, faculty, and programs
 Requirements and goals of college academic departments as they relate to undergraduates
 Student recruitment, retention, and outreach practices in higher education
 Higher education policies and procedures including student support services and recruitment
strategies; State and Federal laws and regulations concerning Federal Educational Rights and
Privacy Act (FERPA)
Skills:
 Supervisory and management skills
 Effective verbal and written communication with a wide and diverse range of people within and
outside the university
 Excellent interpersonal skills
 Attention to detail
 Problem solving
 Independent decision making
 Organization and time management skills
 Leadership skills in assessing current trends in student populations and how to deal with them
 Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not
limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email)

the regular business day requiring travel within and outside of Nevada

 Work with a diverse population including prospective and current students, parents,
community members, faculty and staff

knowledge of these current and up-to-date.
 Learn the content of the college curricula quickly in order to facilitate student recruitment and
retention
