1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The position of Associate Director, Raggio Research Center (RRC) for STEM Education, is selffunded solely through sponsored research and training grants from national and state agencies and
foundations. As such, the incumbent is responsible for identifying developing, writing, submitting, and
administering grant proposals individually and in collaboration with others both across campus, in the
community, and at other institutions to secure new and continuing funding. The incumbent is
responsible for overall management of multiple grants ensuring that they are well managed both
fiscally and programmatically. The position supervises grant personnel, both professional and
classified staff, as well as graduate and undergraduate student workers. The incumbent is responsible
for all reporting required by the University and granting agencies, ensuring compliance with the
agencies’ fiscal policies and with the grant requirements. Funding secured by the incumbent ties
directly into the University’s research and outreach missions, providing support and training for faculty
and students, and professional development funds and training to Nevada’s K-12 teachers, especially
those in rural districts and under-served populations (based on ethnicity, race, gender, disability,
geographic location, socio-economic status, etc.). The position is housed in the Raggio Research
Center (RRC) for “Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics” (STEM) Education in the
College of Education (COE) and has campus, statewide, and national foci. The position reports to the
Dean, College of Education.

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or

Level of Freedom:
Problems and issues within grant projects must be dealt with and solved in innovative and practical
ways, requiring judgment to be exercised in situations where there are few, if any, policies or
precedents, and where approaches are only generally defined. The incumbent is often required to
adapt methods to meet evolving conditions. The individual is solely responsible for proposal
development and submission and administration of multiple million dollar budgets for grants received
from federal, state, and local sources. The Associate Director assigns projects to staff and oversees
and ensures compliance with grant requirements, and gives final approval of actions. The individual
must identify partners and cultivate and maintain relationships to ensure future funding and growth of
STEM educational programs. The individual must identify emerging opportunities to advocate for and
promote the STEM program. The Associate Director consults with the Dean and Director on long-term
strategic planning and goals of the unit. The Associate Director advises the Dean on new
collaborative partnerships formed.
Impact:
Decisions and judgments impact the RRC, COE faculty and students, and K-12 teachers and students
statewide in Nevada’s rural counties through the funding that is acquired and the services provided,
including educational technology and training. Grants are of national and state significance in
educational technology and professional development research and training for faculty, students and
K-12 teachers and students. Decisions and judgments contribute to the overall mission of the RRC,
COE and the University by security external funds to support education, research and outreach, as
well as providing employment for graduate and undergraduate students. Decisions and judgments
impact increased or decreased funding for projects, departments, colleges, and universities.
Administrative policies and procedures are developed by the incumbent who has considerable latitude
for independent action and is evaluated on the results of these actions.
