Level of Freedom:
The Associate Dean must take direct action and intervention on behalf of the University on reported
Greek Organization violations of campus policy and in many cases of local and state law. This
involves resolution of complaints by university police, faculty, staff, and other students, of individual
student misconduct and misconduct of student organizations, through independent investigation of the
incident, determination of appropriate system-wide (NSHE) and university-wide (UNR) charges,
convening of informal disciplinary meetings and/or formal disciplinary hearings, and imposition of the
appropriate disciplinary sanction. The Associate Dean intervenes in cases of student requests for
mediation and advocacy and in doing so has the responsibility to determine whether each case
presented has merit and to decide upon the most effective and fair approach to resolution. The
Associate Dean serves as the University’s administrator of the policy on Academic Standards
(promoting academic honesty/preventing cheating) and determines whether a student charged with
academic dishonesty shall go before a disciplinary process for suspension or expulsion and carries
out all student appeal processes related to charges of academic dishonesty.
Impact:
Conduct decisions made by the Associate Dean provide guidance and assistance to students by
helping them undertake future proper choices regarding academic conduct which will comply with the
campus policies and regulations. Decisions on mediation and advocacy impact directly upon the
student requesting assistance and the faculty and/or administrator who is the responding agent to the
concern. Poor decisions or action on the part of the Associate Dean would result in serious negative
consequences for the student (academic programs, employment, academic appeals). If the Associate
Dean is unsuccessful in carrying out duties of policy administration, future action with the
department/faculty in question would be seriously jeopardized. The academic integrity of the
institution, through the administration of Academic Standards Policy is impacted in every case that the
Director administers. The appropriate decisions related to policy development, policy enforcement,
representation of campus policy to adjunct parties who advise the fraternities and sororities, and the
appropriate judgment of legal responsibilities of the University in the administration of disciplinary and
