Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Management and Executive Programs in the College of Extended Studies and is responsible for developing, administering and expanding several continuing education programs, professional development certificate programs, individual professional development courses, and customized contract training programs that update and promote knowledge and skills for participants from both private and public sectors, as well as provide youth outreach programs. The incumbent is responsible for developing outreach programs to serve a wide variety of constituents by communicating with various individuals, private organizations, and government agencies to develop partnerships. The Assistant Director is also responsible for administering the Elected Officials and Elder College programs, managing financial aspects of the programs, conducting needs assessments, and supervising instructors and student employees, and advising students. 2. The numerous budgets and programs managed are in excess of $250,000 cumulative. This position manages self-supporting programs while building institutional capacity, therefore affecting the university as a whole by involving faculty from a variety of departments and disciplines. The decisions and judgment of this position affect the university in a variety of ways. An error in pricing, selection of professional program curricula, instructors, and venue could impair the business/entity’s opinion of the university. Egregious judgments and failure to follow the contract or agreement could put the university at risk of a lawsuit. Poor judgments while working within the university community could delay programs or damage the reputation of the university with the general public. The scope of clientele this position come into contact include not only the local community, state, and region; but also national and international middle/upper managers. This position is responsible for dealing with business and government (U.S. and foreign) through discussions and salesmanship with middle and upper management personnel. This positions primary responsibility will be to work with the professional community, governmental agencies, and community groups to develop highly sought after programs. In the ever changing market place of business, industry and government, knowledge and use of current trends are crucial for the viability and survival of a continuing education organization. It is vital that this position be able to interpret the client’s needs and wants into a substantial pedagogically sound professional education program with contemporary content. This position must make an educated decision based on models from other schools or by interpolating similar program modalities into an effective contract training or public offering of a professional development course. In many cases, programs created have a national and international audience. 4. Describe the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to successful performance of this job. Knowledge: Knowledge and application of adult learning theory and practices Fundamental knowledge of organizational, management and leadership development strategies and concepts. Demonstrated ability to incorporate these concepts into appropriate courses, seminars workshops and programs Knowledge of basic financial and accounting practices and interpretation and analysis of financial reports.
