1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Assistant Director, Nevada Geriatric Education Center (NGEC), assists and supports the NGEC
Director in the implementation of NGEC grant and contract objectives and related activities.The
individual is responsible for stimulating interest in and developing geriatric educational programs and
services targeted to university staff, community health care professionals, agencies, organizations
and others involved in the aging network and those working to address geriatric education needs. The
Assistant Director works with the Director to ensure NGEC grant and contract objectives and other
activities are achieved and submits information for progress and final reports. The incumbent
compiles needs assessments, outcome evaluations, and other data for reporting purposes and
provides supervision of NGEC faculty and staff in Las Vegas. The individual assists in securing
funding for NGEC programs by working with the Director in the preparation grants or contracts and
unrestricted eduational grants, and identification of partners to reduce expenses and support
functions. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of the Nevada Geriatric Education Center.

75% - Program Development and Implementation
 Facilitate and lead meetings of planning groups to develop programs and curricula
targeted to NSHE faculty, students and/or health care professionals to enhance current level
of expertise in geriatrics
 Develop, implement, and oversee educational offerings (e.g., Continuing Education programs)
to specific target audiences (faculty, residents, health care professionals, students, etc.)
 Coordinate the logistics and programmatic aspects of program development and
implementation (e.g. prepare and submit applications for continuing education credit to state
boards)
 Conduct educational presentations
 Stimulate interest in geriatric education and services through personal contacts with Nevada
System of Higher Education (NSHE) administration, faculty and staff, community health care
professionals, agencies, organizations and others involved in the aging network
10% - Funding Related Administration
 Prepare progress and final data and reports
 Ensure NGEC grant and contract objectives and other activities assigned to Las Vegas office
are on target
 Prepare or assist with preparation of grants or contracts and unrestricted educational grants,
and with identification of partners to reduce expenses and support functions
5% - NGEC Faculty and Staff
 Work with NGEC faculty and staff to ensure grant and program objectives are met
 Supervise volunteer and paid NGEC faculty and staff in Las Vegas
5% - Community, University and National Contacts
 Partner with NSHE entities (Nevada AHEC, Sanford Center, University of Nevada, Reno
(UNR) and University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) departments of Internal
Medicine and Family Medicine, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and community
agencies to address geriatric education needs

Continue and/or develop relationships with local aging network representatives and community
organizations (e.g., Veterans Affairs (VA), Aging and Disability Services Organization)
Participate in and support NGEC Advisory Board activities
Participate in UNR and department committees and activities (e.g., department staff meetings,
UNSOM search committee)
Represent the Nevada GEC at national organizations and meetings (e.g., National Association
of Geriatric Education Centers and scientific meetings)
5% - Data and Evaluation
 Oversee data and evaluation process for NGEC programs offered through the Las Vegas
office
 Compile needs assessment, outcome evaluation, and other data for reporting purposes
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The NGEC Assistant Director is charged with assisting the NGEC Director in implementing the NGEC
grant, contract and fee for service objectives and developing the NGEC. Information is provided so
that reports may are written and submitted to the federal granting agency and other funding sources in
a timely manner. Activities must be coordinated with community agencies and health care
professionals, NSHE administrators, faculty and staff. Programs and meetings will be conducted to
promote the NGEC efforts throughout the state. A personable yet discerning manner along with
effective and prompt follow-through is essential to overall program development. Activities must be
well-organized and meet the mission of the NGEC and the University of Nevada School of Medicine.
Impact:
The actions of the NGEC Assistant Director reflect back to the AHEC department, the School of
Medicine, UNR and NSHE on a community and national level based on job responsibilities and
interactions as noted above.
