Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Assistant Director of the John Ben Snow Sculpture Center (Center) on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) manages the operations of the sculpture center and associated facilities and regularly teaches one to two courses per year in a variety of sculpture topics. The individual collaborates with the Department of Art faculty in developing and managing academic curriculum. The Assistant Director is responsible for professional management of the equipment, materials, maintenance, and safety requirements per mandates from Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). The position reports to the Director of the Center. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or the university as a whole. Level of Freedom: The Assistant Director has full managerial control of a major area of the Art Department, including the general sculpture laboratory, welding and woodworking studios, foundry, exterior spaces and storage facilities. The Assistant Director works in collaboration with the Director of the John Ben Snow Sculpture Center in the development of curriculum and long-range goals. The Assistant Director recommends, trains, and manages certified laboratory monitors including graduate students, postdoctoral associates or fellows, or staff members. The individual is responsible for a large and highly visible facility that includes equipment and personnel required in an effective and safe laboratory environment. The position is expected to exercise authority to halt unsafe operations at any time and to restrict shop access to anyone who violates the rules. A wide variety of compliance issues are directly managed, including OSHA and National Fire Protections Association Code (NFPA), as well as State and Federal law regarding general negligence, property and premises liability. The Chair is consulted on initiating new projects and grants, sources of funding, and significant equipment purchases. Impact: The position maintains high standards in instruction, processes, technical problems and safety issues involved in the operation of a robust, demanding, and potentially hazardous laboratory. The incumbent’s work also impacts the students’ experience through additional instruction and fulfills University mandates in student shop safety policies and practices. Failure to meet zero occurrences of safety incidences could cause injury, loss of life, loss of property, and loss of program productivity and accreditation. Additionally, such a safety infraction would reflect negatively on the Center, the department and the college with regard to promoting a safe learning and teaching environment for students and faculty. 4.
