Level of Freedom:
The Assistant Director has full managerial control of a major area of the Art Department, including the
general sculpture laboratory, welding and woodworking studios, foundry, exterior spaces and storage
facilities. The Assistant Director works in collaboration with the Director of the John Ben Snow
Sculpture Center in the development of curriculum and long-range goals. The Assistant Director
recommends, trains, and manages certified laboratory monitors including graduate students,
postdoctoral associates or fellows, or staff members. The individual is responsible for a large and
highly visible facility that includes equipment and personnel required in an effective and safe
laboratory environment. The position is expected to exercise authority to halt unsafe operations at

issues are directly managed, including OSHA and National Fire Protections Association Code
(NFPA), as well as State and Federal law regarding general negligence, property and premises
liability. The Chair is consulted on initiating new projects and grants, sources of funding, and
significant equipment purchases.

The position maintains high standards in instruction, processes, technical problems and safety issues
involved in the operation of a robust, demanding, and potentially hazardous laboratory. The
