ADMINISTRATIVE FACULTY JOB DESCRIPTION APPROVED POSITION INFORMATION (to be completed by HR) Effective: 4/1/2015 Title Range JCC 4 67673 Assistant Coach, Men’s Basketball Essential Function: Heavy Work Description: Heavy Work - Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Heavy work requires walking or standing to a significant degree and pushing and/or pulling. 1. The Assistant Coach, Men’s Basketball, in the Intercollegiate Athletics Department (ICA) is responsible for assisting the Head Coach in developing, teaching, and promoting all aspects of a competitive Division IA men’s basketball program. The position is responsible for practice and game day coaching, recruitment and retention of student-athletes, counseling student-athletes regarding athletic, academic, and social issues, academic instruction and integrity, and program promotion and fundraising. The Assistant Coach oversees the handling of administrative details of the group and team coordinator such as travel, transportation, scheduling, and other logistics. The position acts as Head Coach in his/her absence and supervises lower level coaches as directed by the Head Coach. The individual acts as a representative of UNR to promote the University and ICA in a positive light within the community, the State of Nevada, and nationwide by recruiting first-class student-athletes and by coaching and guiding them to the best of their abilities. * Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division. 2. If line of progression, define for each range as above. 25% - Coaching - Teaching/Training – Technical Information Direct practices and game coaching in coordination with Head Coach Teach technical aspects of the game and coach the student-athlete in the fundamentals and strategy within their sport as part of an academic course Ensure compliance with NCAA, Conference, and university rules and regulations (subject to disciplinary or corrective action as set forth in the provisions of the NCAA enforcement procedures) Provide a safe environment for student athletes on and off the field and specifically during a University sponsored athletic event 1 Assistant Coach, Men’s Basketball 25% - Student-Athlete Conditioning Oversee off-season conditioning programs (running and weight training) 15% - Offensive and Defensive Plays – Game Planning Handle aspects of offensive and defensive plays as directed by Head Coach 15% - Scouting / Film / Recruitment / Counseling Manage scouting reports and film breakdown Identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes; conduct onand off-campus visits; serve as liaison with high school and university officials regarding various student services such as admissions, financial aid, etc. Counsel student athletes regarding academic advising and other problems; monitor academic programs and integrity of student-athletes; and promote retention of student-athletes 10% - Public Relations, Promotion, and Fundraising Participate in community activities and public relations events with high schools, parents, community and within the university Oversee and participate in fundraising for both the program and the department as a whole When practical under the circumstances, intercollegiate staff is encouraged to voluntarily attend all athletic events to promote audience participation and support for UNR’s team efforts 10% - Staff Supervision and Program Management Assist with budgeting and administration of the program Coordinate all aspects of the duties and responsibilities of the other coaches as directed by the Head Coach Monitor the scholarship program 3. The position must perform the job duties with little direct supervision and with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The position is expected to direct practices, teach technical aspects of the game, and coach the student-athlete in the fundamentals and strategy within their sport as part of an academic course. The position must be able to identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes and make recommendations for athlete additions to the Head Coach. The program must be in compliance with current NCAA and Conference rules and regulations and non-adherence or non-compliance results in ineligibility to play in NCAA and Conference athletics. 4. Describe the types of problems, issues, action, communications this position typically takes to the supervisor for resolution and/or consultation. Provide examples. If a line of progression, describe the supervisory consultation at the highest level. The Assistant Coach counsels student-athletes in academic and personal areas as necessary. When issues with student-athletes go beyond normal counseling or create legal ramifications, 2 Assistant Coach, Men’s Basketball the position makes recommendations for resolution to the Head Coach who makes final determination of course of action. The Head Coach gives final approval on adding new recruits to the program and in overall game planning and implementation. 5.
