MINOR IN FILM STUDIES
The Department of English now offers a formal minor in Film Studies, open to
English Majors and other students interested in film.
The minor consists of four courses, described below.
The following three courses are required for the minor:
FILM 3200—Film History and Theory—A survey of the major developments,
movements, and critical approaches within the first hundred years of cinema. The
course emphasizes an understanding of the historical, cultural, commercial, and
aesthetic contexts that influence film, but also develops the student’s understanding of
a film’s narrative and visual structure and its place within established theoretical
traditions. Prerequisite: English 2110
FILM 3220—Studies in Film—Analysis of film from such perspectives as genre,
literary and film aesthetics, and literary adaptation. This is a special topics course,
with new subjects chosen each semester. Recent topics include the cinema of Alfred
Hitchcock, the hero in American film, Film Noir, and American films of the 1960s.
Prerequisite: English 2110
FILM 4200—Advanced Studies in Film—An intensive study of selected topics in
American and International cinema, emphasizing critical theory and analysis of films
and related readings. This is also a special topics course, with new subjects chosen
each semester. Recent topics include the Auteur Theory, the South in American film,
and documentary film. Students in this course are expected to have a good
foundation in film studies, and are expected to complete an individual research
project. Prerequisites: FILM 3200 or FILM 3220 or Permission of the Instructor
The fourth course in the minor is chosen from among the following:
FILM 3107—Writing Short Films
FILM 3108—Feature Film Writing
Both of the screenwriting courses offered by the Department of English are
appropriate for students interested in creative writing and/or further study in film
