UVU/CHSS: Research Fellowship (2011-2012) The Research Fellowship (RF) is an annual internal grant competition to support research efforts by members of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The grant is tenable for 12 months with the obligation to provide the Dean with a final report of completed research activities. CHSS recognizes that the ability to attain external funding is becoming an increasingly important component of a successful academic career, and would like to provide research funding to scholars who are beginning new projects or may need to reinvigorate their research profile. RF Application DEADLINE: November 1 at noon. Submit your application to Dr. Frederick White, Associate Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences (LA 209e) The Faculty Development Committee, drawn from a range of disciplines, will evaluate the RF proposals. As it is not possible to have every area or specialty represented, applicants are advised to strictly adhere to the following guidelines in preparing the research proposal and write for a broad audience. 1) Summary of Proposed Research (maximum 1 page), including: Scope and objectives of the proposed research Scholarly significance and potential contribution to knowledge Social relevance or practical importance, if applicable 2) Description of Proposed Research (maximum 2 pages), including: Work already completed and/or in progress and schedule of work to be done Methodology Theoretical approach or conceptual framework, as appropriate 3) Budget and Justification (maximum 1 page) 4) Current CV 5) A brief statement of support from the Department Chair indicating that a discussion has taken place and support has been given to the applicant for the submitted RF. The Faculty Development Committee will evaluate proposals according to the following criteria: • Excellence and feasibility of the proposed research • Clear budget justification (including details of other funding sources, if any) • Budgets should be limited to a maximum of $10,000 unless prior permission is received from the Dean and the Chair of the Faculty Development Committee. • Please note in the budget if you have received RF support in the last three years. If you have, include particulars about the project proposal and the research outcomes. • Applicant’s academic record • The extent to which funding the project will strengthen the applicant’s research profile Applications will be considered for both operating expenses and equipment with the following restrictions: • Travel for data collection, archival work, field work or other direct research activities will be considered; however, travel to conferences will not be supported. Travel for research purposes should be very carefully justified. • The use of RF funds to pay student assistants for a very short period or for field work under the supervision of the researcher is permitted. • The RF may not be used to pay for secretarial or other support services which can be provided to the researcher by their department. • Requests to purchase personal computers will not be considered. • The RF cannot be used to complete dissertation research. Those who receive RF funding will be asked to provide a one-page report and a 10 minute presentation to the Faculty Development Committee on progress made towards the research project during the duration of the fellowship. The final report will be due within two months after the completion of the fellowship.
