Questions/Answers needed for Yale/J&J website to illuminate the role of resident
scholars at each site; to be completed by jointly by US and site mentors for each site
Site: Makerere University Mulago Hospital
What is the Resident’s role in providing medical care:
 educator
 observer
 care provider
 other: student
All of the above, the role of resident after at least a week of pure observership is mainly
that of a health practitioner in training and includes teaching (medical students and
peers), observational learning, direct participation in care provision and learning
under supervision.
The Resident’s day to day duties will be as a/an:
 Observer
 Provider with direct supervision
 Provider with supervision available

The resident is accountable to the designated supervisor and will perform his or her
duties commensurate with his or her defined roles.
Do duties change over the course of the rotation? No/Yes If yes, how?
NO, This roles are pre-determined and fall within the above described scope

All of procedures are purely voluntarily.
Some procedures require observation, others full participation of the resident all under
direct supervision

Taking Call—residents are required to participate in call especially within the units they
are rotating in under direct supervision of their current supervisor. There is no overnight
call. Even when the team is on call, the participants juts stay till 8 PM to complete the
evening on call rounds.
Weekend Hours- see schedule
Week Day Hours – see schedule – Schedules are from 8 am to 6 pm, however if one is
on call, one stays till 8 pm in order to complete the evening on call rounds
Free Time/Vacation Days- see schedule
Flexibility of scheduling--- though the schedules are highly structured, personal requests
and needs will be taken into consideration.
Expectations for sociocultural etiquette
We expect the resident to respect and conform to the institution sociocultural etiquette.
This is an international rotation in a resource limited setting with a different social
cultural etiquette so the resident needs to understand and respond appropriately to the
environment.
Safety issuesAll residents are initiated on safety precautions and guidelines especially in regard to
prevention of hospital infections. They do also have their own PEP and have access to
basic health care
Participation in existing research
Research is permitted and encouraged within the national and institutional guidelines for
research under a direct supervisor.

There are many opportunities for learning and this provides adequate opportunity for the
resident to meet their learning needs
