Strategic Reading and Writing Syllabus
2015-2016
Welcome,
My name is Mrs. L. Hunter, and I will be your child’s Supportive Reading
Teacher this school year at Johnston Middle School. I am so excited that your
child is a part of my class this year! Your child will be reading various novels,
applying reading strategies that will increase comprehension, enhancing
fluency and expanding their vocabulary.
Course Outline
The 6th/7th/8th grade curriculum implements the Texas Essential Knowledge and
Skills (TEKS) and will prepare students to pass the State of Texas Assessment of
Academic Readiness (STAAR) in May.
Class Objectives:
*Literary Non-Fiction (organizational patterns text structure, author’s
purpose, and style)
*Expository Text (organizational patterns and graphical components,
procedural)
*Short stories: drama, narrative elements, myths & legends
*Persuasive Techniques
* The Research process
*Rhetorical Devices
*Literary Fiction (plot, characters, setting)
*Poetry (figurative language)

Tests/Quizzes
 There will be at least 2 test grades each six weeks. Quizzes may be
announced or unannounced.
 Students should review class notes and rework sample homework and quiz
problems in order to be well prepared for each quiz and test.
 Tests and quizzes will be kept in the binder and/or teacher folder in order to
review for semester exams and STAAR
Late work Policy
Students are able to turn in any late or missing work. Late homework will be
accepted the next class period. Ten Points will be deducted each day the
assignment is not turned in. It is the students’ responsibility to get any missing
work and turn it in promptly.

Classroom Rules
1. Raise your hand for permission to speak or to leave your seat.
2. 10/10 rule (No students are allowed to leave the classroom the first or last
10 minutes of class.

Checking pen (assorted colors except blue/black ink)
1pk of multicolor highlighters
1pk of small post it notes (any color)

1. Sanitizer and/or Clorox wipes and Kleenex
2. Dry Erase Markers (Expo preferred)
3. Colored Printer Paper (Neon and/or Pastel)

Conference time/period is Purple days during 2nd period. Please contact your
