Welcome Back What is Site Council? a. Reviewed the Site Council Statutes b. Discuss the specific qualities of Site Council at MHS: *The Form: The proposed “Leadership Team” and its relation to professional development and site council. Talked about the composition of the leadership team (composed of department chairs), and it’s responsibility for professional development. *We discussed how site council can look more like a PLC. The importance of data informed decision-making. We also talked about “who our students are” as a site council. Could site council serve as a resource to help PLC’s with what they need? *We will hold quarterly meetings, rather than monthly. The meetings will be held at 7:15 in the Principal’s Conference Room on October 17th, January 9th, March 12th, and May 21st. *Mark will send an e-mail recruiting a classified staff member. 2. PLC’s, Common Core State Standards, and the Landmark Document *We talked about how state standards have been nationalized in 46 states, in Reading, Writing, and Math. We discussed whether or not our teachers are “teaching to the test.” We talked about the importance of not doing this. What do grades really mean? We are not being consistent with testing/ assessment. We need to be, it helps us be objective in what we are doing. *We talked about the new requirement for a Common Summative Assessment for each PLC, and the importance of letting PLC’s know this right away. *Introduced, then watched the video on Common Core State Standards (17 minutes) that will be shown during In-Service. A. We talked about the importance of “global literacy” and what that means. We talked about having texts that deal with cultures outside of our own, and how this would be a big step toward global literacy. B. We discussed the meaning of the “Whole Child Initiative” We handed out and disussed the landmark document, and how “K-14” is the timeline we are looking at, because we are looking for success after graduation. C. The goal of the video: Aligning institutional practices to these new standards. D. We talked about digital portfolios, and how this would be helpful for following the new standards. E. We talked about how we could “broadcast” the landmark document. Can we make posters of this document, and have it in the halls? Can it go out to parents? F. We talked again about how the Leadership team would be primarily responsible for delivering professional development for the school this year. 3. Equity Discussion: A. Photo Voice: Students presented to us a Summer project they took on called “Photo Voice.” They presented photos they took and what they will present to the MHS Community. It will be presented at the Welcome Back Assembly or Freshman Assurance Day. Heidi Spoke about “Peace Crew,” a club that will be meeting Tuesdays after school. B. Review survey feedback. Can/ Should we address Equity through our PLC professional development? What does this look like? Do we still have an Equity Committee/ Peace Coalition? We reviewed the feedback. We decided that we will still have an Equity Committee that meets every other week. We need to check with Kim Feicke to see if she will still be involved. C. We need to give a copy of Ken’s data to PLC’s and the Leadership Team. Particularly comparative GPA data regarding the sub-groups: White, Hispanic, Black. We can use this in one of the breakout sessions. 4. School Improvement Plan (SIP) a. We reviewed the SIP from last year, and drafted a SIP for this year based on last years model. b. The plan for professional development for In-Service Days: *Our Time Frame: 2.5 hours. We will watch Aeylin Summer’s video and have 4 break-out groups.
