Expected in all areas: All food and drink items must be consumed in the Nest, or in a classroom with teacher permission (except water) Electronic devices may be used before 9:30 AM and after 4:05 PM Follow dress code during all school events Keep hands, feet, and objects to self Stay within middle school boundaries Use appropriate language and a respectful tone of voice Bags must be kept in lockers STEP 2: Teach Expectations for ASSEMBLIES Being Responsible Leave belongings in classroom Acting Respectfully Applaud at appropriate times Listen respectfully Sit quietly during presentations Show flag salute etiquette Staying Safe Stay seated in assigned area Enter and leave in an orderly fashion Key Points: 1. Most school assemblies will take place in the gym. 2. Always follow teacher directions regarding class seating. 3. In bleachers, scoot together with feet inside steps - to make room for everyone! 4. Stand respectfully during the flag salute or national anthem. 5. Sit quietly as soon as the speaker asks for attention. 6. Remain seated until your section is dismissed. Reason the Expectations are Important We need to gather as a large group for information, entertainment, and celebration. Each speaker deserves the respect of your attention and polite acknowledgement. Teaching Non-Examples and Examples Non-Example Example Students are talking with their neighbors while a Presenter shares a song written about a struggle in speaker is presenting. Activity: You will practice this behavior during the first assembly attended by your class. When you go, have the class file into a section of the bleachers. Remind them to sit together, and if possible, using only 2-3 rows in a section. Practice standing quietly and saying the flag salute together, then sitting quietly. After completing trivia questions, instruct class to dismiss safely. Trivia Questions: 1. Where will you sit during the assembly? Answer: With your class, in the section your teacher designates. 2. What is the signal for attention in an assembly? Answer: If any adult or student speaker asks for attention, give it.
