List of Contributors Nicole BALL is a Senior Fellow at the Center for International Policy in Washington, DC. For much of her career, she has worked on issues relating to security sector governance. Ball is the co-editor, with Kayode Fayemi, of the handbook, Security Sector Governance in Africa (Lagos: CDD, 2004). Alan BRYDEN is Deputy Head of Research at the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF). Adedeji EBO is a Senior Fellow and Head of Africa Programme at DCAF. Victor-Yves GHEBALI is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva. David G. HAGLUND is the Sir Edward Peacock Professor of Political Studies at Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada). He received his Ph.D. in International Relations in 1978 from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC and has held visiting professorships in France and Germany. He co-edits the International Journal. His research focuses on transatlantic security issues. Candace KARP has worked in Israel, the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Afghanistan for the past six years, focussing on political and civilmilitary affairs, reconstruction and development in state building frameworks, and international humanitarian and human rights law. Dr. Karp holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Queensland, Australia. David M. LAW is a Senior Fellow at DCAF, where he works on security sector issues and acts as the coordinator of the Working Group on Security Sector Reform (SSR). In this capacity, he has been involved in efforts to mainstream SSR in the activities of various intergovernmental organisations and to enhance their cooperation. Oksana MYSHLOVSKA is a Research Assistant at DCAF and a Ph.D. student at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva. Richard PONZIO is a DPhil candidate in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford. He has served with the UN and OSCE in Africa, Asia, the Balkans and the Pacific. He co-edited the special issue on Afghanistan in the journal International Peacekeeping (January 2007) and co-authored the Human Development Report 2001 and 2002. Vincenza SCHERRER is the UN SSR Project Coordinator at the DCAF, where she works on the research and elaboration of projects on the United Nations approach to SSR. Ursula SCHROEDER is a Research Fellow at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Berlin. She holds a Ph.D. from the European University Institute, Florence. Her current research focuses on the institutional development of EU crisis management capabilities, on the interface of internal and external security policies and on EU strategies for SSR in its own neighbourhood. Andrew SHERRIFF is an independent consultant who has implemented programmes, researched and published on issues of conflict, security and development. He has undertaken work for DFID, UK Global Conflict Prevention Pools, ECDPM and UNIDIR amongst others. He previously worked for International Alert, managing their engagement on EU and conflict sensitive development.
