The program blends digital and print materials to help students grow in their mathematics understanding and their ability to apply their new skills to solve problems. These are just some examples of the activities they might experience in the classroom: • Solving problems and explaining their thinking in a write-in text and online. • Using online animations to help build understanding in a visual way. • Working individually, in pairs, and in small groups to solve problems and share their thinking. • Completing homework that promotes computational thinking, fluency. • Engaging in online practice that provides help as needed through worked-out examples and self-help videos. • Experiencing a variety of math activities that include Math Games, Math and Science Activities, and Today’s Challenge in order to apply understanding in different contexts and different levels of learning. Teachers will be sharing more information from this new curriculum throughout the school year. Conversations With the Principal Thank you so much to everyone who responded to my survey that asked what days and times would work best for a monthly time to meet with me for a discussion about teaching and learning in our classrooms. It appears that Thursday evening from 6:30-7:30 seemed to be the most popular date and time. I will be scheduling the first Conversation with the Principal for Thursday, Nov. 5th at 6:30 in our library. I hope you will be able to join me as I highlight some of the learning experiences your children are having. Thank you so much for your participation in our parent/teacher conferences on October 29th and 30th. Your partnership with the school is so important to the success of our students. No matter how well we may know you and your family, it is important that we know who is in the building for the safety of our students and visitors, should an emergency occur. If you need to drop something off for your student, you may leave it in the office and we can get it to them. This helps reduce classroom distractions. Thank you very much for helping to keep our school safe! Parents can check student’s meal accounts anytime at: https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ All you need is your student’s ID# number. This number is on your child’s report cards or you may contact the office. Elementary meal prices for 2015/16 are: Breakfast $1.95 Lunch $2.90 Milk $0.50 Why does my child have a sheep stamp on his or her hand? This means their lunch account balance is less than $10.00. Changing After School Plans? To help ensure the safety of all our children, please always send a signed and dated note detailing your child’s after school change of plans. This includes riding home with a friend, riding a different bus or having a parent pick them up. We know last minute changes are sometimes necessary. Please make every effort to call the school office prior to 2:30 PM if at all possible. Thank you for understanding how important it is for us to know where all our students are going after school. If your child is going to be absent, please call the office before 9:00 am and let us know. Scouters Mountain PTA Monthly Roundup October 2015 Dear Scouter Mountain Parents and Families, We hope you are all doing well and having a great fall. It has been a very smooth transition into the school year and we are seeing many happy, energetic faces in the hallways, classrooms and playground. Thank you for surrounding your children with love and encouragement. This carries over in school and the students come ready and eager to learn each day! The Scouters Mountain PTA, teachers, staff, and administration would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the school community for your participation in our Donor’s Choose and Jog-A-Thon fall fundraisers. Many classrooms are already using their new computers from Donor’s Choose and others are getting them shortly after their projects are funded! The Jog-A-Thon was absolutely amazing and we substantially surpassed our goal this year (roughly $29,000)! We had a picture perfect day for the event and each classroom had great fun running in their themed attire. We cannot thank you enough for your generosity and support of both successful fundraisers. We also want to acknowledge and thank our outstanding Jog-A-Thon committee chair, Wendi Wallace, and her team of volunteers for their dedication and many hours of hard work in planning, organizing, and executing this event. A special shout out to Nicole Manley for her invaluable assistance to Wendi. There are too many volunteers to mention individually, please know that each of you are greatly appreciated! As we roll into November, there are some fun, up-and-coming events. • Nov. 4th - Presto the Magician visits students for meeting Jog-A-Thon goal • Nov. 6th - Friday Morning Meeting celebrates successful Jog-A-Thon • Nov. 11th - Veterans Day - No School • Nov. 13th - Movie Night 6:30 - 9:00 • Nov. 18th - PTA Meeting 6:30 - 8:00 Childcare provided (school age children) Again, thank you, thank you, thank you! We are deeply grateful for the many ways each of you support our students and our school. May you all enjoy a colorful November and a bountiful Thanksgiving.! Ly Furrow, President Orlando Perez, Treasurer Chrissy Hamlin, Secretary Rebecca Halldorson, Membership Wendy Wilhelms, Legislative Tiffany Myers and Alexis Puerta, Volunteer Coordinators What should I do to protect myself from the flu this season? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. People should begin getting vaccinated soon after flu vaccine becomes available, if possible by October, to ensure that as many people as possible are protected before flu season begins. However, as long as flu viruses are circulating in the community, it’s not too late to get vaccinated. In addition to getting a seasonal flu vaccine, or if you have not already been vaccinated, you can take everyday preventive actions like staying away from people who are ill and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading flu to others. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) (CDC) Parent Drop Off and Pick Up Procedures: Student safety is one of our top priorities! Please follow these procedures when dropping off or picking up your child at school. " " " •" " •" " •" " •" " •" We have a student loading zone that follows the sidewalk all along the front of the building. This is a large area and should allow for our traffic to move safely and efficiently. Students may exit or enter their car from any place along this marked "Student Loading Zone" by walking along the sidewalk to or from their car. Please have students exit or enter the car from the passenger side so that they are not entering into a traffic lane. " This Student Loading Zone is marked in yellow. Please DO NOT park in the student loading zone. Think like the airport: Active loading and unloading only. When you are ready to go, please pull out into the traffic lane. Vehicles in this traffic lane should move slowly through to the exit and should not be stopping to let students in or out of the vehicle. Please keep a close eye out for families walking through the parking lot. If you want to walk your child into school, you must park in one of the marked parking spaces and walk your child across the cross walk. Children will not be allowed to cross the parking lot without an adult in attendance. DO NOT stop and load or unload students in the cross walk zone. For the most efficient use of our loading zone, please pull as far ahead as you can, past the entrance. The loading zone goes all the way up to the end of the parking lot divider (by the black benches). Thank you for following these procedures to help keep all of our students (and drivers) safe and on time for school! There are families in our school district who find purchasing school supplies a financial burden. Please help support another child in our elementary schools with a monetary contribution for school supplies. A $25 donation would cover the cost of school supplies for one child, for an entire school year. Any dollar amount is greatly appreciated. On behalf of our students, we thank you! ! Please send or bring cash or check (written to North Clackamas School District) to your school office. Keep saving and bringing in those Box Tops! The top class each month will earn a popcorn party. Notes from the Library We are off to a great start this year with a lot of students checking out some amazing books. In the month of October we checked out 2,861 books, which is amazing! Yeah, READERS! With new books coming in and rainy weather arriving, I wanted to just remind students to put their library books in a plastic bag to keep them from getting wet. If a book does get damaged, please pay for it as soon as possible so that I can replace it. If a book gets lost, it too will need to be paid for. If you find your book in a timely manner, then your money will be refunded. Kindergarten and 1st graders are asked to keep their book bag in their backpacks so that they do not lose them. Emails go out once a month to remind students to bring their books back to the library. Sometimes the books are already in their classroom, just waiting to come back to the library. If your book is already in the classroom, it will eventually show up in the library. Once the books are returned then your student can start checking out again. Please visit our webpage at http://www.nclack.k12.or.us/domain/ 2645 to see what is happening in the library, to check your student’s library schedule, and to look at book series. Also, check out Destiny, our library search catalog at: http:// destiny.nclack.k12.or.us, then select Scouters Mt. Library. This is a great way for the students to look at what is in the library. Make a resource list of books your student would like to read, print it off, and then have them bring it next time they are in the library Thank you! Mrs. Smith Help! We already have many coats, sweatshirts, sweaters and lunch boxes in the Lost and Found. We would love to return them to you. Please label your children’s items so they can be easily identified.
