Lesson 1 Ж Infants and First Class Me and the Sea: In Our Aquarium ACTIVITY: “Where do I live?” Matching Exercise A game to see what creatures and other living things we might find in our aquarium and where we might find them. This activity will help the children to think about all the different places to live in an aquarium, to reflect on what they might have observed previously in the aquarium, to hypothesise about where a creature might be found, and to know where to look for them in the aquarium. Objective: To put the laminated images of the creatures in the correct habitat zone of the aquarium. Time: 10 minutes Materials: “Me and the Sea: In Our Aquarium” Presentation slide 16 Laminated “what” cards (flatfish, starfish, limpet, hermit crab, wrasse, prawn, anemone, blenny, seaweed, algae) White tack Method: 1) Bring up the aquarium slide (slide 16 in presentation) on the whiteboard. Discuss where all the different places are in the aquarium that something might live. 2) Hand out the laminated “what” photos, to groups of 2-4 (or more, at teacher’s discretion) students. Ask them to work together to figure out where they think that things (aquatic creature, seaweed or algae) would live. Note there are clues on the back of each laminated photo, if required. 3) Ask them, one group at a time, to come up to the image and stick their creature to the right spot on the aquarium, using white tack. What Area it would live (habitat zone) 4) Discuss. Guide for teachers: Habitat zones could include on the bottom, on/in the rocks, in the seaweed, in the open water, on the walls of the aquarium or other surfaces. Most likely locations are in the table to the right. Flatfish Sandy Bottom (in/under the sand!) Starfish On the bottom, or the rocks Limpet On the rocks Hermit Crab On the bottom, or the rocks Wrasse Open Water Prawn On the bottom, or the rocks, or in the seaweed Anemone On the rocks Blenny Hiding in the rocks or the seaweed Seaweed On a rock Algae On any surface
