-Europe- thought they were civilizing Africa or “doing them a
favor”

First section (western Africa)
-former slave trading posts became ports for other products
-Samory Toure- tribal chief in western Africa who led resistance to
the French before finally being captured
-Gold Coast- previous name for Ghana, the British had to fight off
a strong ethnic group called the Ashanti in order to take control
Liberia- stayed independent (republic of former slaves from the
U.S.)
Second section (central and eastern Africa)
-Stanley and Livingstone – Stanley was a reporter sent to find
Livingstone, a missionary who had not been heard from in years.
Stanley uttered the famous phrase, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”
upon finding him
-King Leopold II – Belgian king who took over Congo, with the
help of Henry Stanley acting as his agent. Took control of all the
resources and the people of Congo suffered
-Rinderpest – disease that spread among the African cattle after
contact with European cattle, led to food shortages for the Africans
