To have you remember that I am here to provide you with all the resources, assistance, and encouragement you need in order to learn and accomplish the tasks asked of you. To foster a like and/or love for 3-D modeling, animation, & technology. Course Outline: *Important Note: This is simply an overview and is subject to change. However, if any changes occur during the semester, advance notice will always be given to both students and parents. Throughout the course industry principles and real-world problems will be interwoven throughout each component of the curriculum topics. 1) Introduction to Multimedia Concepts & Purpose 2) Interface of Autodesk’s ‘3D Studio Max’ (aka 3Ds Max) & an Introduction to Primitives 3) The Modeling Basics of ‘3Ds Max’ 4) The Basics of Modeling with Splines, Motion Graphics, & Polygons 5) Undertaking the Materials Browser 6) Bringing Together the Basics & Rendering 7) Introduction to the Fundamentals of Animating a Sequence with Key Frames 8) Creating Cameras within an Animation 9) Incorporating Lighting within an Animation 10) Introduction to the Advanced Tools of Adding Sound Files & Special Effects 11) Creating a Final Animation & Electronic Portfolio Computer Lab Hours: Monday through Friday: If you need to utilize the lab before/after school, all I ask is you let me know one day in advance. I do not mind coming early or staying late. Most days, I typically arrive at 7:15 a.m. and until 4:00 p.m. Saturday through Sunday: Lab Closed Semester Course Work for MP1, MP2, & Final: Case Studies, Quizzes, & Homework – Approximately 30% of MP Grade Homework Assignments There will be occasional homework assignments given throughout the semester so that each of you may practice with the application of the concepts being taught within class. Each of these assignments can be successfully completed without a computer, and I will provide you with any resources/information you may need. You will also be given sufficient time to complete these assignments outside of class. Case Studies Case studies will be utilized to assist in learning important concepts and/or reviewing concepts. These case studies are designed to aid, teach, and provide practice with creating and implementing solutions using industry practices to solve problems. Their primary goal is to have the student showcase their ability to think like an animator. Quizzes All exams will test both theory and application of the concepts taught. Usually a study guide or review session will be provided prior to an exam. The purpose of the exams is not to trick you. I simply want for you to show me what you know. Each exam will consist of a theory based section and computer application based section involving a real-world scenario. Remember all I ask is for you to always try your best and I do give partial credit so don’t leave questions blank! Page 2 Class Assignments & Class Participation – Approximately 35% of MP Grade Class Assignments There will be daily assignments. These are very important and must be completed within the time frame provided. Any student who does not complete an assignment within the class time provided will need to schedule time to meet with me after school to complete the work. Remember, if extra time is needed it is the student’s responsibility to be proactive and let me know. Late assignments will be accepted, however, only partial credit will be received. The only way a student will receive a 0 for an assignment is if it is never completed, never turned in, or there was academic misconduct. Class Participation Each student is expected to participate daily, and a participation rubric is located on my website. Effort means so much to me as your teacher! I cannot stress that enough, and therefore, each day you will receive a participation grade. The way a student utilizes class time will also be taken into account. If a cell phone is visible, in use, and/or goes off this will result in point deductions for participation. Projects – 35% of MP Grade There will be projects that incorporate various lessons taught throughout each unit. This will involve students working to showcase their knowledge and understanding of Multimedia concepts and theories, as well as 3Ds Max. In addition, students will critique each piece of work. Final Project & Electronic Portfolio** (1 per Semester; 20% of Semester Grade) Each student will be given a set of requirements for a comprehensive animation they will create in 3Ds Max. Students will present their final project to their classmates and me. Throughout the course you will choose three pieces of work you completed individually, along with one partner or team-based project you completed that you feel demonstrate your understanding of the information. This will comprise your portfolio & you will present it to me and explain what you have learned and how you feel your work depicts this. Attendance/Tardiness: Students are expected to attend all class periods. Role will be taken at the very beginning of class. Absence from class tends to limit student’s achievement (and usually their grade as well). If you are absent, always go to my website. All topics, assignments, notes, etc. yo miss will always be available there. Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is NOT PERMITTED, and it will be dealt with severely. I will follow Madison High School’s Policy on Academic Dishonesty or Misconduct and in addition the student will receive a zero for that assignment (i.e. quiz, test, project, etc.). General Classroom Procedures: The following are the general classroom procedures and expectations I have for my classroom. I expect each student to follow them at all times. If these are not followed the student(s) will be subjected to the consequences of their actions. THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THEM ALL: Respect is a two way street and it is vital to have for one another in order to be successful. Therefore, I will ALWAYS respect each student as long as each student ALWAYS respects me, their fellow classmates, my procedures, my expectations, and my classroom. Additional Procedures & Expectations Procedure #1: The procedures of MHS carry over into this classroom. Therefore, any procedure MHS has, I have. Procedure #2: Each student is expected to maintain a safe learning environment. There is a NO TOLERANCE policy on bullying and harassment. Procedure #3: Students are expected to treat their classmates in a professional and kind manner. Page 3 Procedure #4: Each student is expected to listen and follow directions. If a student has a question, the student should raise their hand – do not just call out. If I am talking, no one else should be. Procedure #5: Students are expected to work hard each day by attending class, being on time, being prepared, participating, and maintaining ethical behavior. Procedure #6: Refer to the “Computer Rules and District User Agreement” you all signed as users in the district. There is to be NO food or drink in this room. This rule will be enforced. (The only exception is if I give you permission to do otherwise.) Although you may not like a procedure, I ask that you respect it. Procedure #7: Each student will be expected to read and sign an agreement I have for my classroom inclusive of the cell phone submission policy. Procedure #8: Each student is expected to remember three very important quotes which are three of my favorites: “…TIS AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED, TRY, TRY AGAIN.” “THE ONLY PLACE SUCCESS COMES BEFORE WORK IS IN THE DICTIONARY.” “DON’T BE AFRAID TO DREAM & SET GOALS SOME MAY SAY YOU CAN’T ACHIEVE – IF ALL THE GREAT MINDS THROUGHOUT HISTORY LISTENED TO THE ‘NAYSAYERS’, WE WOULDN’T BE HERE RIGHT NOW!” Important Additional Information: My goal is to make this class and its subject matter applicable to your life and show you how it is applicable within the industry and vital for the world. It is my hope that you enjoy your learning experience. Therefore, I welcome your input and respect your opinions and ideas. If you have a question, I expect that you will ask it – there is no such thing as a stupid question. If you need extra help, I am here to help you – NEVER hesitate to ask. I am available before and after school and during my planning period. ********************Welcome to Multimedia I! ******************** ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
