Cooperative Learning Roles
READER: Reads the clues aloud to the
group one at a time.
RECORDER: Keeps the record for the
group on the hundred board. The recorder
crosses out all numbers the group decides
do not fit the clue just read.
CHECKER: Makes sure the recorder
crosses out all the numbers the group decides
do not fit the last clue. The checker tells the
leader when the group is ready for the next
clue.
LEADER: Makes sure everyone does his
or her job. The leader tells the reader when
to read the next clue. The leader may ask
the reader to repeat a clue for the group.
The leader reports the group’s answer.

Jimmy Jingle was having a detective party for some of his new friends. He gave
directions to his house but decided not to give the house number. Instead, he
gave his new friends some clues to see who could find his house on Bell Street.
Here are Jimmy’s clues for his house number:
• The number is greater than 50.
• The number is less than 90.
• The two digits are different.
• The tens digit is larger than the ones digit.
• It is an odd number.
• The sum of its digits is 15.

TELLY’S AGE
Telly, who loved to talk, refused to tell anyone how old she was. All she would
do was give one hint or clue a day to help her friends narrow down the possible
ages. Finally, on the sixth day, Greta told everyone that she had figured out how
old Telly was. Here are the clues Telly gave:
• I am older than the number of days in December.
• I am younger than the number of pennies in a dollar.
• If you count by 5, you say my age.
• There are no even digits in my age.
• I am older than the number of minutes in an hour.
• The sum of the digits of my age is the same as the number of months in a
year.
How old does Greta think Telly really is?

IS JONAS IN TROUBLE?
Jonas loved to play video games, but his mother was always telling him to quit
and do his homework. Finally, they reached an agreement. Jonas could play for
45 minutes after school and then he must stop and do homework. One day, Jonas
was playing video games when his older brother came home. His brother asked
him how long he had been playing, hoping he could get Jonas in trouble. Jonas,
trying to confuse his brother, gave him only these clues:
• I have been playing fewer minutes than there are in an hour.
• The number of minutes is greater than the number of pennies in two
dimes.
• If you count by ten, you will say the number of minutes I have been
playing.
• There are no odd digits in the number of minutes.
Should Jonas get in trouble with his mother?
