_____ Do you know the difference between an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) and an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, 8)?
_____ Can you compare numbers using place value words?
Example: Mrs. Daniels changed the 3 in the number 23,412 to a 6. How does that change the value?
Answer: The value is increased by 3,000 because the 3 is in the thousands places. Changing the 3 to a 6 means
that I am adding 3 more thousands.
Strategy: Re-write the number with the new digit in it and compare numbers. 23,412 becomes 26,412. It may
be easier to see that you have added 3,000 to the number. Or, you could subtract 26,412 – 23,412 to arrive at the same
answer.
