_____ Do you know the difference between an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) and an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, 8)?
_____ Can you compare numbers using place value words?
Example: Mrs. Daniels changed the 3 in the number 23,412 to a 6. How does that change the value?
Answer: The value is increased by 3,000 because the 3 is in the thousands places. Changing the 3 to a 6 means that I am adding 3 more thousands.
Strategy: Re-write the number with the new digit in it and compare numbers. 23,412 becomes 2 6 ,412. It may be easier to see that you have added 3,000 to the number. Or, you could subtract 26,412 – 23,412 to arrive at the same answer.
