Messier cataloged it on February 17, 1781. Only with much concentration can it be seen at all." It is 100,000 light years in diameter and is an infrared source. It is a member of the Centaurus Galaxy Group (along with NGC 4945, 5102, 5253, and 5068). This galaxy has produced five supernovae in 60 years (SN 1923A, SN 1950B, SN 1957D, SN 1968L (type I), and SN 1983N). What’s going on here?
