Star A is a massive spectroscopic binary, discovered by Vogel in 1890. The period is only 4.01 days! It is also an infra-red source. Spica A is 10.9 times the mass the of the Sun and 8.1 times as large. Spica B may be 4 times larger than the Sun and 6.8 times as massive. Given these sizes and masses, and the amazingly short orbital period, they must actually be in contact with each other as they dance through space like two ice dancers! From James Kaler's Star Notes: The Sun passes Spica in the fall, rendering the star a harvest symbol that is reflected in its name, from Latin meaning "ear of wheat," the name actually going back to much more ancient times. -9- Zone 215 Spica actually consists of two stars very close together that orbit each other with a period of only four days. At least one of them is a dying giant. Both are blue in color and quite hot, with temperatures in excess of 20,000 degrees Kelvin.
