It is 78 million years old and 7 light years in diameter. It is about 3 times as far as the Hyades and is moving through space at about 25 miles per second. (At that hectic clip, it will take 30,000 years to move a distance equal to the apparent diameter of the moon.) Alcyone is 1,000 times as bright as the Sun and probably 10 times its size. The faintest stars in the cluster are 1% as bright as the Sun (red dwarfs). All the major stars rotate rapidly, with Pleione rotating 100 times faster than the Sun. Pleione is also slightly variable and has a violently turbulent atmosphere (of course, with an egg beater that large and fast under it, you can see why), showing at times a shell in the spectrum, at other times no shell. Pleione is about 5 times as large as the Sun, so its rapid rotation is even more remarkable, and probably produces a very flattened discus shape. There are no red giants yet, the H-R diagram showing a classical stable Main Sequence pattern. In fact, much of the nebular incubator that hatched these stars is still there, having not yet been totally dispersed by the fierce stellar winds of the B giants. (You can glimpse this nebulosity around Merope on good nights.) Such an event is a special treat, especially when the dark limb of the Moon takes its leisurely stroll through the cluster, clipping out the stellar beacons one by one in what is probably one of the most instantaneous events your eye can record. In 1999, David J. Pinfield of The Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, completed a mass study of the Pleiades and concluded that the total cluster mass, matter both visible and unseen, is about 735 solar masses. Observations: C8 at 10x. It looks best in the spotter. Steve Coe has a colorful and poetic description for this cluster: "Glittering blue-white diamonds shining through lace." This is the only one of the reflection nebulae in the Pleiades which was known to John Herschel when he compiled his General Catalog (GC) in 1864, and has been assigned the number GC 768. In the NGC, it is described as very faint, very large, diffuse nebula around Merope; its angular diameter is given as half a degree (same as the Full Moon). The Merope Nebula contains a bright knot, IC 349, which is very small and 36" south following (east) of Merope (more exactly, at position angle 165 deg). This small - 21 - Zone 133 reflection nebula was first discovered by E.E. Barnard in 1890. It appears such bright, compared to its suroundings, because of its proximity to the star Merope.
