Classroom Expectations Arrive to class on time with all necessary materials Begin and stay on task without reminders Be an active listener (keep head up, stay in your seat) Treat the learning environment, other students and adults with respect Accept responsibility for your own work and behavior Abide by MHS Honor Code Follow classroom policies: AP Calculus AB focuses on conceptual understanding of limits, derivatives and integrals. This is implemented by presenting topics four different ways including graphically/visually, numerically, analytically and verbally. AP Calculus AB offers opportunities for students to develop technical competence and a sense of utility of calculus. The course work encourages students to become logical thinkers, learning to write the solutions to problems in a connected, step-by-step manner with explanatory sentences. Consistent practice with using multiple representations of solutions allows students to develop a comprehensive understanding of each topic studied throughout the year. 1. No cell phone use in the classroom unless otherwise instructed. You will be given one warning for the year, after that all devices will be immediately confiscated and turned into the office. 2. Bathroom use is not allowed during the first five minutes or last five minutes of class. Trips to the bathroom should only occur when necessary and should not be abused. IV. Grading Policy Your marking period grade will be based on a points system. The grade is a percentage calculated by dividing total points earned by total points possible. The points will be comprised of tests, quizzes, homework, and additional assignments including projects, notebook checks, etc. Tests may be given in the middle and/or at the end each chapter and there will be several quizzes given throughout each chapter. You will be given sufficient notice when a test or a quiz will be given. V. Homework Policy VI. Late work and Make-up work Policy VII. Class Participation Homework is an essential part of this course. I believe that the best way to gain a true understanding of math is to learn by doing. Homework will help emphasize what was learned in class as well as help students develop responsibility, accountability and time-management skills. The homework in this course is intended to give a hands-on experience with the material. Homework will be assigned almost every day and there will always be opportunities to ask questions about the previous night's homework the next day in class. The homework should take students no more than a half hour on average. All assignments should include your name, the date, and the assignment number written in the top right corner of the paper. The homework must be legible and all necessary work should be shown for all problems. Homework will be assigned 3 - 4 times a week and checked at random. Homework amounts to approximately 10% of the marking period grade. Homework credit is awarded as follows: - 2 points if homework is complete, on time and supporting work is shown - 1 point if homework is partially complete, on time and supporting work is shown - 0 points if homework is incomplete, not on time and supporting work is not shown Late work will only be accepted for an excused absence or excused tardy. The work must be shown the day you return to class. If you miss class, you are responsible for getting the assignments from my website or from a peer. If you are absent on the day of a test or quiz, you will be expected to make up the test or quiz upon your return. If you know you are going to be absent, it is your responsibility to get the assignment(s) ahead of time. For extended absences, you will be given 2 days for every day you are absent to make up missed work. You will receive a zero on any test, quiz or homework assignment that is missed because of an unexcused absence or a cut. You are expected to contribute positively to class discussions by respectfully listening to and responding to others. There will be many opportunities to demonstrate work at the board, ask questions and work cooperatively with a peer or in a small group. VIII. Teacher Availability Tutorial A-Day and B-Day: Common Lunch In addition to my tutorial period, I am available after school Tuesday through Thursday until 3:15.
