Course Description
Algebra 2 builds on concepts mastered in Algebra 1 and Geometry. Algebra 2 offers opportunities for students to develop as active problem solvers, critical thinkers and effective communicators. Consistent practice of algebraic skills enables students to make conjectures while working through challenging problems. Algebra 2 requires students to explain their thinking and analyze diverse problems, while also providing students with the chance to develop mathematical reasoning to work through everyday mathematical challenges.
Each unit provides the students occasions to develop deeper understanding of mathematics coupled with gaining procedural skill and fluency and application as outlined in the Common Core State Standards. Major topics include polynomial functions, radical functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, rational functions, sequences and series, trigonometric ratios and functions, probability, and data analysis and statistics.

1.
No cell phone use in the classroom unless otherwise instructed. You will be given one warning for the year, after that all devices will be immediately confiscated and turned into the office.
2.
Bathroom use is not allowed during the first five minutes or last five minutes of class. Trips to the bathroom should only occur when necessary and should not be abused.
IV.
Grading Policy
Your marking period grade will be based on a points system. The grade is a percentage calculated by dividing total points earned by total points possible.
The points will be comprised of tests, quizzes, homework, and additional assignments including projects, notebook checks, etc. Tests may be given in the
middle and/or at the end each chapter and there will be several quizzes given throughout each chapter. You will be given sufficient notice when a test or a quiz will be given.
V.
Homework Policy
Homework is an essential part of this course. I believe that the best way to gain a true understanding of math is to learn by doing. Homework will help emphasize what was learned in class as well as help students develop responsibility, accountability and time-management skills. The homework in this course is intended to give a hands-on experience with the material.
Homework will be assigned almost every day and there will always be opportunities to ask questions about the previous night's homework the next day in class. The homework should take students no more than a half hour on average. All assignments should include your name, the date, and the assignment number written in the top right corner of the paper. The homework must be legible and all necessary work should be shown for all problems.
Homework will be assigned 3 - 4 times a week and checked at random.
Homework amounts to approximately 10% of the marking period grade.
Homework credit is awarded as follows:
- 2 points if homework is complete, on time and supporting work is shown
- 1 point if homework is partially complete, on time and supporting work is shown
- 0 points if homework is incomplete, not on time and supporting work is not shown
VI.
Late work and Make-up work Policy
Late work will only be accepted for an excused absence or excused tardy. The work must be shown the day you return to class. If you miss class, you are responsible for getting the assignments from my website or from a peer. If you are absent on the day of a test or quiz, you will be expected to make up the test or quiz upon your return. If you know you are going to be absent, it is your responsibility to get the assignment(s) ahead of time. For extended absences, you will be given 2 days for every day you are absent to make up missed work. You will receive a zero on any test, quiz or homework assignment that is missed because of an unexcused absence or a cut.
VII.
Class Participation
You are expected to contribute positively to class discussions by respectfully listening to and responding to others. There will be many opportunities to demonstrate work at the board, ask questions and work cooperatively with a peer or in a small group.
