SOCIAL STUDIES NOTES: The students are learning how to integrate information from various texts to provide an overview of landforms, climate, historical events, resources & tourism in the Northeast region. MATH: The students started learning about the Operations & Algebraic Thinking unit. We took a “hands-on” learning approach to solve the algebraic equations by using a visual and kinesthetic instructional approach developed by Dr. Henry Borenson. The purpose is to help the students make the connections from concrete to abstract thinking using the algebraic concepts. If you would like more information, please check out their websitehttp://www.borenson.com/ The students will be interpreting & solving number word problems/equations as a comparison using a letter to stand for the unknown quantity. Then we will move onto patterning and then fractions. If your child is still struggling with their math facts, PLEASE make sure they are spending at least 15 minutes daily on memorizing the facts either by writing out the facts, using a computer/app program or even by orally going through the facts. READING & LANGUAGE ARTS We have moved into our Fiction Unit. Students will be able to explain and describe the different story elements; setting, tone/mood, characterization, plot diagram, conflict, resolution and theme using fictional text. Students are reading a different fictional novel based on interest during TAG time. Students are applying taught strategies to their fictional novel. We will stay in these groups for the rest of the month. The students will focus on “word study” activities instead of the Words their Way spelling. Students will be focusing on the meaning of the words along with applying them into their writing. The students wrote a narrative story this past month. They will use their writing sample to learn a variety of grammar rules along with editing sentences/paragraphs. This will give them an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and apply learned knowledge to a finish product. The students learned how to write the correct order of adjectives along with how to write dialogue between two characters. The students will be focusing on the word meaning of a variety of adjectives, so the students are able to use them in their writing along with application of the story elements.
