Torey J. Sabatini School
Madison, NJ
April 2016
This month we will finish our unit on mental math. The children worked hard to add/subtract the ones and then the tens in their heads to come up with the answer.
We will start our unit on Telling
Time. The children will practice telling time to the hour and half hour. We will also work on reading calendars.
In Language Arts, the first graders have been busy working on comprehension skills. They have been working on making predictions, using clues to make predictions, inferring, visualizing, determining importance and asking questions (and searching for answers).
They also focused on retelling stories using story elements.
In May, the first graders will begin their character study unit.
In Social Studies, the students finished up their chapter on families, roles of different family members, and looking at different places in the world that families live. We will start our chapter on wants and needs of families.
In Science, the students are eagerly awaiting the start of our aquarium unit. Students will study the needs of living things and an underwater ecosystem.
This month, we will begin our new unit on Persuasive Writing. This is always a first grade favorite. They will learn the parts of a friendly letter, persuasive language, and how to revise. The first graders focus on giving reasonable explanations to convince someone to give them what they want. This is a unit where the students are able to use their creativity! In May, we will begin our unit on poetry.
