Based on the results of this
assessment, will you revise your
outcomes? lfso, please
summarize how and why in the
boxes below:
All course sections (only 1 per
semester) administered an
introductory comprehension test
and a final exam over the same
content. The test consists of
several sections related to
academic note-taking: 1) students
took notes related to a 20-30
minute biology-related lecture, 2)
students answered 5 short-answer
questions related to the content in
the biology lecture (i.e.
recognizing key lecture
information), and 3) students
gave the appropriate note
symbols for common words used
in academic note-taking (e.g.
because= b/c).
Jn Fall 2012 semester, there was
significant improvement on the
final exam/post-test in all of the
sections. For the note-taking
section, the improvement ranged
from 7% to 20%, and close to
85% of the class got scores of
97% or 100%. For the
comprehension questions, there
was a wide range of
improvement, from 15% to 60%
progress from the pre-test results.
Half of the students received
scores of I00%. The most
outstanding results were in the
knowledge of note symbols used
in academic note-taking. More
than the majority of the students
(i.e. 80%) progressed between
65-1 00% between the pre- and
post- tests.
All of the students showed
improved ability to listen to
academic lectures in English,
recognize the overall structure,
and transcribe key detai Is and
support in an organized fashion.
Very helpful to note-taking in an
efficient way, the knowledge and
use of note symbols showed
tremendous change for all the
students. It is clear that the
students who test into ENG 8 lA
level come to the College ESL
Program with little note-taking
experience; even one student got
0% on the pre-test section related
to note symbols. This form of
assessment is successful in
demonstrating that every student
is meeting this course outcome.
No changes wilt be
recommended to course
curriculum outcomes.
