In Fall 2014, it was decided to
assess Outcome # 2 to focus on
the oral skills of the students
participating in an oral interview
based on their own essay about
the Mexican-American War
written as a midterm assignment
for SPAN 226 in the course of the
current semester. This was a
projection made in the last
assessment of SPAN 226 for the

SPAN 226 participated in an
interview one-on-one with the
instructor. An assessment tool
containing ten questions was
used for the assessment.
At a 90% accuracy response of
the core indicators used for the
interview, the levels for SPAN
226 arc well above average and
therefore an effort should be
made to maintain such
percentages. The participants
showed the natural nervousness
about having to speak in public,
but I am certain that was due to
their lack of experience. I believe
it would be highly beneficial to

area the students showed some
control of the grammar concepts
newly acquired but invariably
fell back upon the 'regionalisms'
which they have been using all of
their lives. They also made some
grammar mistakes that did not
aflect meaning. In the area of
fluency they showed, as normal,
thoughtful delay in formulation
of thought into speech; however,
the language flowed through
extended discourse. In the area of
vocabulary the students were
very conversant with the
vocabulary required by given
contexts; sound control and
resourcefulness. Some
vocabulary mistakes which did
not afTect meaning. In the area
of pronunciation the students
exhibited no mistakes.
The assessment indicated that
none of the indicators assessed,
(90% accuracy) fell below a 70%
accuracy level.
