Mrs. Lummis’s Classroom:
Newsletter – May 13, 2016
Hello and Happy May to everyone! Thank you so much for coming to
our Spring Open House. The students really enjoyed showing their
completed projects to parents! Also, thank you so much for my teacher
appreciation gift. We will definitely use the movie card to see any of the
latest movies out now!
Our last day of school is Friday, June 3. We will be having an end of
the year assembly at 9:00 AM that day. Also, the May reading log is due
Wednesday, June 1. Your child should be reading a minimum of 400
minutes per month. Please add it up and sign before turning it in. Thank
you!
In reading, we have been reading a chapter book called Tornado. Our
class has been learning how to make inferences, and about different kinds of
figurative language. We studied idioms, similes, metaphors, personification,
hyperbole, alliteration, and much more. Identifying an author’s use of
foreshadowing and flashback was a topic of discussion as well.
In math, our lessons have centered on fractions of groups. We have
also studied equivalent fractions and completed some challenging bar graph
activities! Another area of study has been figuring the perimeter and area of
figures.
In science, we have been learning all about plants and animals! We’ve
done many activities with parts of plants and plant needs. We have discussed
different animal traits and what vertebrates and invertebrates are. The best
part is taking care of our darkling beetles! We have watched these adult
insects go through the larva (mealworm) and pupa stages. The pupa stage is
where the mealworm goes through a change into the adult stage. Observing
this life cycle has been a fun hands on activity for all students!
In social studies, our lessons have centered on economics. We learned
about needs/wants, trade, community, and community helpers.
In writing, we wrote expository essays on community helpers (as you
well know already!) I was very impressed with the creativity and writing
skills your children demonstrated!
Remember, that our field trip to the Shedd Aquarium is Thursday,
May 26! Your children need to bring a disposable sack lunch and drink on
that day. If you haven’t got permission slips in yet, please return them by
this Monday, May 16.
Have a wonderful weekend!
