This Week’s Highlights Upcoming Events Reading – In our ongoing investigation of poetry, a focus has been on learning and practicing word attack strategies to help the children figure out new/unknown words. They have been using the rhyme scheme of the poem, their background knowledge, and their schema along with the content of the poem to make educated guesses as to the meaning of new/unknown words. Students also used clues to recognize the feelings inside a poem by looking at various literary devices and formatting techniques. April 29th – Variety Show from 7:00-9:00 PM May 2nd – MAP testing May 9th – MAP testing May 13th – High Tech High Touch Visit May 20th – Early Release – Children are dismissed at 12:50 PM Writing – Student are reading nonfiction texts, identifying the main idea, and finding the supporting details for the main idea. Next, they are putting the supporting details in their own words using complete sentences. Students are writing acrostic poems this week, too! Math – The children continue to extend their addition strategies to three-digit numbers using the count on strategy and place value. They are defining and identifying polyhedrons, flat and curved faces, edges, and vertices. Whew! Science – Our exploration of plants continues! We are locating the parts of a plant and identifying their roles in the life cycle of a plant. Star Student Status Congratulations Omantas Bubenas for consistently showing good leadership skills! Omantas has habitually used our accountability talking stems posted within the classroom to successfully communicate constructive ideas, receive feedback, and gift feedback to peers in order to nourish his growth mindset.
