Kindergarten News February 29-March 11 Literacy Last week, we took some time away from our study of non-fiction to read books by Dr. Seuss in celebration of his birthday on March 2. We read a biography about Dr. Seuss and enjoyed listening for patterns and rhymes in a variety of his books. In our journals, we responded to reading by answering the question Dr. Seuss asks at the end of The Cat in the Hat. “What would you do if your mother asked you?” I am happy to report that most friends would tell their mothers the truth. Math -We continue to work with 2D and 3D shapes. This week, we worked on creating shapes with geoboards and on determining how many sides and corners each shape has. -We are learning about the concept of subtraction. We are using pictures, objects, and counting strategies to solve simple subtraction equations. Writing -We continue to write almost every day. The children enjoy choosing the topics they write about, and they are excited to share their work with others. When we read a book together, we think like writers and look for ideas we can use in our own writing. -We continue to work on using writing conventions in our daily work. We are working on spacing, punctuation, and using capital letters correctly. Science and Social Studies We are getting ready for Spring! We read about March weather, and talked about the saying, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” We are hoping for a “lamb” day next Wednesday for our field trip! Ryerson Woods Field Trip *We are so excited about our field trip to Ryerson Woods next Wednesday! We will be watching the weather closely and hoping for a great spring day! Please dress your child for the weather, including boots! Even if it is warm, it can be very muddy in the woods. *On Thursday March 17, we will be making pancakes and trying syrup made from corn as well as real maple syrup. Please let me know if your child should not try the pancakes and syrup. Report Cards Today your child brought home his/her second trimester progress report. Please take some time to look it over and let me know if you have any questions. I am so proud of all of the kindergarten friends! They are working hard and making so much progress. They are enthusiastic learners and wonderful friends. Thank you for all you do at home to support our learning in kindergarten. Erin’s Law Our Erin’s Law presentations will take place this Tuesday, March 15th. The lesson will be presented by our social worker, Mrs. Grobarek, and will center around the book Your Body Belongs to You by Cornelia Spelman. Save the Dates *This week, your child brought home a blue form for you to indicate his/her size for a t-shirt for Field Day. Please return the completed form by 3/24. Remember that Field Day will be in the morning, and there will be no PM kindergarten that day. *On Friday May 27, we will be performing a short play in our classroom at 10:00 (AM) and 2:00 (PM). Families are invited! More information to come later this spring. Take Home Reading Bags On Monday, your child will begin bringing home a take home reading bag. The bag will contain books for your child to practice reading with you at home. The bags do NOT need to be returned to school every day. Keep the books until your child is able to read them fluently, and then return to school so we can put new books in the bag. A letter with more information will be enclosed in your child’s reading bag, and I have attached a note with suggestions to this email. Thank you for helping to support your young reader!
