Brief summary of PI research / research group / centre activity (2 or 3 lines max):
If you are already involved in relevant scholarly activities relating to Brazil, please mention them here.
Research in marine ecology and ecosystems using simulation modelling, experimental ecology and
research cruises. Current applied projects are related to conservation, aquaculture, fisheries ecology
and resource mapping.
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Scaling solutions for integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA)
While the basic principles of an IMTA system are straightforward, there is less information on how
to implement solutions in terms of factors like biomass ratios, system volumes and in guidance for
potential yields and estimates. This project will address these issues to provide guidance on
appropriate configurations for IMTA systems.
Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway:
NUI Galway projects should emphasise features that are not typically available in Brazil – specific equipment,
multi-disciplinarity, aspects of structured programme, links with industry, placements, links with other research
groups etc.
Research will be based in the multi-disciplinary Ryan Institute and will involve registration in a
structured PhD programme. The project will also include field work at the university’s aquaculture
research facility in Carna, where there are projects in finfish, shellfish and seaweed aquaculture
