Research Field D - 'Home Cloud' for Consumer Devices The next generation of CE systems and services will be dominated by mobile thin client devices with significant computational and connectivity capability linked to remote cloud computing infrastructure and service frameworks. These devices will also be capable of powerful multimedia data capture and dynamic content creation in addition to multimedia data consumption. Indeed the only deficiency of such devices is their lack of long-term data storage capabilities. However as wireless network connectivity continues to offer greater speed and higher bandwidths long-term data storage is offered via cloud computing services. Towards a "Smarter" Cloud: Today, the cloud is viewed mainly as means to provide bulk data processing and storage. However as a new generation of consumer IT devices emerges it will become the de-facto endpoint for the rapidly-growing petabytes of user-generated content. A key problem, however, is the linkage between the home and the cloud. In practice it makes sense to store, or cache, most content on an intermediary device, or home storage gateway. Now 95% of this content is not very interesting. By analyzing and determining the nature of conent as it is generated on a CE device and subsequently integrating this knowledge with advanced AI and pattern recognition engines in the cloud environment we can rate and rank the importance of content and determine what should be cached, for how long, etc. Much of this research will revolve around this "home cache" concept with the potential to join a start-up company if the research is successful. Several PhD topics are available in this field.
